The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not contest the forthcoming Tamale Central parliamentary by-election, citing respect for the late Alhaji Dr Murtala Mohammed and the need to avoid inflaming political tensions in the aftermath of tragedy.
The Tamale Central seat fell vacant after the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including the sitting MP. The disaster has sent shockwaves across the nation, prompting calls for unity over partisanship.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said the decision was taken at a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday.
“It would be inhumane and unconscionable to contest this by-election under such circumstances,” the statement read. “The NPP believes the greatest tribute we can pay to the departed is not only to win the fight against galamsey, but to ensure a smooth and peaceful transition for the people of Tamale Central.”
The party further noted that by-elections in Ghana have a history of political acrimony, and that stepping aside was the most respectful way to allow the constituency to mourn without the distraction of heated campaigns.
The Electoral Commission is expected to open nominations in line with Article 112(5) of the Constitution. However, the NPP has made it clear no candidate will be fielded, framing the decision as an act of national interest over partisan gain.
“Consequently, the NPP hereby announces that whenever the Electoral Commission of Ghana opens nomination for the Tamale Central by-election in line with Article 112 (5), of Ghana’s Constitution, the party will, in accord with the national interest, not take part in the contest,” the statement added.
This move, rare in Ghana’s fiercely competitive political climate, sets a precedent for restraint and empathy in moments of national grief.
