Hot SourceThe New Patriotic Party (NPP) has granted a general amnesty to all members who have either been suspended or have disciplinary cases pending before the party’s adjudicatory bodies.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the National Council held on Friday, 25 July 2025, and communicated to the party’s Regional and Constituency Executive Committees in a directive signed by the Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey, on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
Those affected include, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, Paul Afoko, a former National Chairman of the NPP, Sammy Crabbe, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, Boniface Abubakar Saddique, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, among others.
While some were suspended over their disagreement with then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo, others were also suspended for making statements considered detrimental to the party’s image. But Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, Boniface Abubakar Saddique, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen were suspended for breaking away from the party and forming the Movement for Change (M4C) to contest the 2024 presidential election.
According to the statement, the amnesty lifts all existing suspensions and waives ongoing disciplinary proceedings.
However, members who forfeited their membership are required to apply for reinstatement at the national secretariat formally.
Such reinstated members will remain ineligible to contest any internal party election for two years.
“This measure reflects the Party’s unwavering commitment to fostering internal cohesion, strengthening solidarity, and preparing collectively for the political tasks ahead,” the statement emphasised.
Mr Buttey further cautioned party leaders at all levels against arbitrary suspensions of members, stressing that all disciplinary matters must be handled strictly in accordance with the procedures, principles, and due process provisions enshrined in the party’s constitution.
The directive urged full compliance from the regional and constituency leadership to ensure unity within the party as it prepares for future political engagements.
Alan Kyerematen was originally a long-time member of the NPP.
. In fact, he was a founding member and served on its national executive bodies for many years.
However, on September 25, 2023, he officially resigned from the NPPand announced his intention to contest the 2024 presidential electionas an independent candidate.
To rally support, he launched the Movement for Change (M4C). Interestingly, the movement is not a registered political party; instead, it serves as a platform or vehicle for gathering support outside the existing parties.
