The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Monday described the upcoming trial of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as unlawful.

This comes as IPOB stated that Kanu’s trial was an affront to the rule of law, the Nigerian Constitution, and natural justice.

Kanu’s terrorism trial is scheduled to resume on Tuesday at the Justice James Omotosho-led Federal High Court in Abuja.

However, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, called on the international community, including the United Nations, African Union, European Union, and human rights organisations, to intervene and halt what he termed a “judicial travesty.”

A statement by Powerful read partly: “IPOB unequivocally condemns the resumption of the sham trial of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, scheduled for April 29, 2025, at the Federal High Court.

“This trial is not only a gross violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also a flagrant breach of international law, an act of judicial terrorism, and a mockery of natural justice.

“We call on all lovers of freedom, justice, and the rule of law—both within Nigeria and across the globe—to stand against this travesty of justice and demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“To the justices presiding over this case, we urge you to reflect on your legacy. History will not be kind to those who lend their robes to injustice. The Nigerian judiciary must not allow itself to be weaponised as a tool of oppression.

“The rule of law is not a suggestion; it is the foundation of any civilised society. To proceed with Mazi Kanu’s trial is to declare war on justice itself.

“The Indigenous People of Biafra will continue to pursue all lawful avenues to secure the freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the realisation of our inalienable right to self-determination.

“We will not be intimidated, and we will not relent. The light of truth and justice will prevail over the darkness of oppression.”
