Hot SourceNiger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced free tuition for 809 newly admitted students at Abdulkadir Kure University, Minna (AKUM), for the 2024/2025 academic session.
He also revealed plans to allocate 2 per cent of the state’s total investment as an endowment for the university.
Bago stated this during the matriculation ceremony, saying the state is willing to support initiatives that will make the university excel and become a model for others.
The governor announced the cancellation of a previous decision to send students abroad on scholarship, opting instead to invest the funds locally.
“It is not wrong for a leader to make a statement and retract the statement. We had a vision to take some students to foreign lands on scholarship, but today, I have cancelled that decision. I will rather invest the money budgeted for the foreign scholarship here,” Bago stated.
He disclosed plans to build a housing estate for staff and lecturers and revealed that the university will introduce Medicine and Medical Sciences programmes in the next academic session.
According to him, each matriculated student will receive a bursary of ₦100,000.
The Vice-Chancellor of AKUM, Prof. Mohammed Aliyu Paiko, congratulated the students and emphasized that the institution intends to equip them with skills and innovative mindsets to become job creators.
The Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Yahaya Kuta, also praised Governor Bago for his visionary leadership in investing in the younger generation through education.
