Accra, September 24, 2025 – The National Identification Authority (NIA) has moved swiftly to clarify and dismiss a flyer circulating on social media that suggested the validity period of the Ghana Card was set to be reduced.
In an official press release dated September 23, 2025, the authority categorically stated that no such amendment to the law has been made or is currently under proposal. The NIA affirmed that the Ghana Card remains valid for a period of ten years from the date of issuance, after which renewal is required by law.
The clarification became necessary following what the NIA describes as a misrepresentation of comments made by its Executive Secretary, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, during a recent media engagement. The NIA clarified that Mr. Deku did not announce any immediate change in policy.
According to the statement, the Executive Secretary’s remarks were forward-looking, reflecting on a general proposal that future reviews of the national identity system could consider a shorter update interval.
This suggestion was framed within the context of rapid technological advancement and the card’s expanding uses, emphasizing the need for the system to remain responsive and modern.
The authority drew a parallel to a previous upgrade, noting that this hypothetical consideration is similar to the past decision to move from the initial 2D-Barcode card for children to the current, more advanced dual-interface, multipurpose biometric Ghana Card.
Reiterating the rationale behind the current ten-year validity, the NIA explained that the physical card has an estimated lifespan of a decade. Furthermore, cardholders’ personal features, such as their appearance, are expected to change over that period, making a renewal process essential for maintaining accurate and secure records.
The NIA has urged the public to disregard the circulating information as incorrect and reaffirmed its commitment to providing a “secure, reliable and future-ready national identity system for all Ghanaians.”
