The Truth about Tobi Amusan

It has been 2 weeks (July 17, 2022) since our hurdle star, Tobi Amusan, made Nigerians proud, by putting Nigeria on the world record after setting a mark of 12.06 seconds in the 100 meters women hurdles at the World Athletics Championships. In light of this victory we have put together some facts about the athlete;

BIRTH

Oluwatobiloba Ayomide Amusan, popularly known as Tobi Amusan was born on the 23rd of April 1997 (25 years old), in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria and is the last child of 3 siblings.

EDUCATION

She had her secondary education at ‘Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School’, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria.

She attended Tai Solarin University of Education, studying Human Kinetics and spending just a session, before proceeding on a scholarship to University of Texas at El Paso in 2016 for her tertiary Education.

RELATIONSHIP STATUS

Tobi’s relationship status is unknown, but she is presumed to be currently single.

TROPHIES/MEDALS

• After 36 years, Tobi Amusan becomes the first Nigerian in the history of World Athletics Championships to win a gold medal with a ‘12.06’ seconds mark in the finals and ‘12.12’ seconds in the semifinals, making her the second Nigerian to win the world Championships medal in this event.
• In 2018, she became a Commonwealth Champion in the 100 meters hurdles, as she won a gold medal at the Common Wealth Games
• She has won a gold medal twice in the African Championships in Athletics, first in 2018 (at the 21st edition held in Asaba, Nigeria) and in 2022.
• Tobi Amusan is also a two-time African Games champion (2015 and 2019)
• In 2021, She won the Diamond League Trophy in the 100 meters hurdles held in Zurich, becoming the first Nigerian to do so.
• At the African Junior Athletics Championships, held at Adis Ababa, Ethiopia  in 2015 Tobi won a Gold medal at the 100 meters hurdles.
• In 2013 and 2014 she won silver medals, respectively, at the African Youth Athletics Championships in the 200 meters hurdles category and at the African Youth Games in the 100 meters hurdles.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS

Her 12.06 seconds mark has been recorded to be the fourth in world women’s hurdles. She earned a $100,000 for the world record
