Hot SourceThe National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed “deep sorrow” at the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
In a statement released on Thursday, the party described Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings as “a remarkable woman whose lifelong commitment to the empowerment of women and children has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s history.”
The NDC highlighted her work with the 31st December Women’s Movement, through which she “championed education, economic empowerment, and social inclusion for countless Ghanaian women.”
The party also recognised her foundational role, stating she was “one of the founding pillars of the NDC” and “played an instrumental role in shaping the ideals and identity of our great party.”
The statement acknowledged her subsequent departure to form another party, but asserted that “her place in the story of the NDC will always remain significant.”
It referenced a public declaration made by the party on 22 June 2025 – the birth date of the party’s founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings – which institutionalised the date as a party anniversary. On that occasion, the NDC stated it was time for Mrs Rawlings to “resume again her place as the Founding Mother of the NDC.”
The party said it takes “comfort in knowing that this acknowledgment was made while she was still with us.”
On behalf of the NDC, the statement extended “heartfelt condolences to the Rawlings family, especially her children and loved ones.”
“We share in their grief and pray for strength and comfort in this difficult period,” it concluded.
