MTN Ghana pledges deeper investment to drive nation’s digital future

MTN Ghana says it remains committed to expanding digital access and accelerating the country’s transition into a fully connected digital economy.

Delivering a goodwill message at the 30th Africa Internet Summit in Accra, Chief Digital Officer Ibrahim Misto reflected on Ghana’s three-decade Internet journey under the theme “Internet in Ghana, Today and Tomorrow,” and highlighted MTN’s central role in shaping that transformation.

Mr. Misto stated that MTN’s growth story is closely linked to Africa’s wider digital evolution.

“The story of MTN as a business is reflective of the evolution of the Internet within the African continent,” he said.

He added that MTN has moved beyond its origins as a telecommunications provider into a full-scale technology company.

“Our services and infrastructure have advanced to support a plethora of services beyond basic voice and SMS, from data and IoT to digital, fintech and enterprise solutions. MTN has moved from a telco to a technology company,” he stated.

According to him, MTN has invested over US$1 billion since 2021 to modernise its network, expand 4G coverage and extend fibre connectivity to households across the country.

The company’s Mobile Money (MoMo) platform now serves more than 17 million customers, supporting digital finance and widening access to financial services.

Looking ahead, Mr. Misto urged stronger collaboration across sectors to build a resilient and inclusive digital ecosystem for Ghana.

“We envision an Internet ecosystem that is faster, smarter, and more inclusive,” he said.

He added that with government’s digital agenda, Ghana is positioned to lead the continent’s digital future, but stressed that the journey must be a collective effort.

“Through the government’s robust digital agenda, Ghana is poised to lead Africa’s digital future. But this future must be built together through collaboration between government, industry, civil society and the youth who will shape it.”

MTN Ghana, he said, will continue investing in connectivity, digital literacy, platforms, and innovation hubs to empower the next generation, with a mission to build an Internet ecosystem rooted in access, equity and opportunity.
