A man, Hassan Bayaro, 35, from Giza town in Keana Local Council of Nasarawa State, has allegedly committed suicide over debts worth N8 million.

The incident, which occurred at Angwan Nungu, a settlement in Lafia, the state capital, left many people in shock and disbelief.

The victim was last seen in Lafia on Thursday, last week, the day he was believed to have taken his own life.

His decomposing remains were discovered after a foul smell began to ooze out his apartment.

Until his death, Bayaro was a graduate of Mass Communication from the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and a teacher at St. James Secondary School, Lafia.

It was said that Bayaro, who was also into property business, might have been duped and felt he could not repay the debt.

Another source attributed the ugly incident to his inability to marry his lover because they were not of the same faith.

One of the deceased’s friends, who pleaded anonymity, said he had earlier sent a text message to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), where a complaint was lodged against him over debts, threatening he would commit suicide.

Confirming the incident yesterday, spokesperson for the NSCDC, Nasarawa State Command, Victor Jerry, said: “Immediately we got the text, our men swung into action and met him in school. He also sent a text message to his family, threatening that if he was not allowed to marry his girlfriend, he will commit suicide. But his family was against their union because they are of different faith.”
