President John Dramani Mahama on Monday joined fellow African heads of state and government for a high-level meeting of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), ahead of the opening of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) General Debates in New York.
The meeting, held under the theme “Securing Africa’s Health Sovereignty: Political Leadership for Sustainable Health Financing, Local Manufacturing, and Pandemic Preparedness,” brought together key continental leaders to deliberate on strategies for strengthening Africa’s health systems and ensuring self-reliance in healthcare delivery.
Addressing the gathering, President Mahama underscored the critical link between health and national development. “Health is not a cost. It is the engine of productivity and the foundation of sovereignty,” he said, urging African governments to prioritise sustainable health financing and local production of essential medical supplies.
The president is scheduled to host a side event on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. Ghana time, titled “Accra Reset: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development.” The event will explore ways to reshape international cooperation and governance structures to support equitable health and development outcomes worldwide.
The 80th UNGA General Debates officially open on Tuesday, with global leaders expected to present their national statements and outline commitments on pressing global challenges, including health security, climate change, and sustainable development.
