‘Leadership crisis’ – LP Rep Alfred Iliya reveals reason for defecting to APC

A Labour Party, LP, member of the House of Representatives, Ajang Alfred Iliya, has said the leadership crisis rocking the party informed his decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Iliya, who represents the Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency, offered the explanation in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass.

The letter was read out to members of the lower legislative arm of the National Assembly by the Speaker during plenary on Tuesday.

The letter reads: “I write formally to inform you of my decision to defect from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress effective immediately. This decision was due to the crisis of leadership in Labour and though deeply personal, it’s one that I believe is in the best interest of my constituents and broader objectives of national development.

“There are several key reasons behind my decision to make this critical political shift, alignment with the national development agenda; over time, I have closely observed the policies and direction of the APC particularly under the leadership of Tinubu. The APC’s commitment to infrastructural development, economic growth, and national unity resonates deeply with my vision for Plateau State and this country at large.

“I believe that by joining the ruling party, I will be better positioned for the realization of this developmental goal and bring the much needed support to my constituents.

“Effective representation for my constituents as a representative of the Jos-South/East Federal constituency, my primary responsibility is to the welfare and development of my people.

“In recent times, I have found it increasingly difficult to align with the Labour Party approach to national issues especially given its limited influence in the current government structure. I believe that joining the APC will provide me with a greater opportunity to procure federal support for projects that are crucial to the people of Plateau State, including improved healthcare, education, infrastructure and security.

“Again building bridges for a greater Plateau in Nigeria, by making this transition, I aim to play a greater role in fostering unity and collaboration across party lines. I believe that the APC inclusive approach to governance will create opportunities for bridging divides and fostering greater cooperation in the pursuit of the common goal.

“My decision is not based on personal gain but on the desire to contribute to the national cause while advancing the needs of Plateau State.”
