The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has apprehended a bullion van driver for flouting traffic laws by driving against the designated flow of traffic.
The driver, identified as Mr Daniel Ikede, was intercepted while transporting cash from a First Bank branch at Chevron towards Ajah.
His actions violated provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, which explicitly prohibits one-way driving due to its severe safety risks.
During interrogation, Ikede reportedly admitted that he drove in the prohibited direction while following a police escort vehicle that accompanied the bullion van from its point of origin.
However, members of the security escort reportedly fled the scene, avoiding apprehension.
Reacting to the incident, Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, described the offence as reckless and an abuse of perceived privilege.
He emphasised that compliance with traffic regulations is mandatory for all road users, regardless of status or the presence of security personnel.
“One-way driving is among the most dangerous traffic offences in Lagos, often resulting in avoidable accidents, property damage, and traffic chaos,” Giwa warned, affirming the administration’s commitment to impartial enforcement under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In a statement, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, reiterated that the arrest shows the agency’s dedication to road safety across the state.
“Traffic laws are binding for all motorists, private, commercial, corporate, and even those under security escort. Violations will attract strict enforcement measures to protect lives and maintain smooth traffic flow,” Taofiq stated.
The apprehended driver and the bullion van have been taken into custody and are set to face prosecution in accordance with Lagos State traffic laws.
