Kwara teacher denies claims of alleged assault against NYSC member

The Kwara State Government has condemned the recent alleged assault against a youth corps member serving at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, who was assaulted by a teacher identified as Mrs Amuzat Fatima Nike.

The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, stated this on Friday at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Ilorin, the state capital.

Hajia Modibbo Kawu described the act as unacceptable in society and Kwara State as a whole, stressing that “the state is known for peace and harmony and the state government will not allow anything to truncate the existing peace in its academic institutions.”

She said: “The Anti-Loitering Team of the ministry and the management team of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission have paid an unscheduled visit to the school to investigate the alleged assault case and calm has been restored.”

The commissioner appealed to the management of the National Youth Service Corps and all concerned people to be patient, law-abiding and perform their duties without fear, as the concerned teacher has been summoned and necessary disciplinary procedures will be taken accordingly.

However, in a telephone chat with DAILY POST, the accused teacher on Friday denied the encounter, saying the story is not true.

According to Amuzat: “While the corper was passing by, I queried her on why she could not greet people. She responded by saying that she greeted but people did not hear her and she walked away.

“Coming back, I called her, but she did not respond. I then asked what was wrong with her, saying, ‘I spoke to you, but you did not respond’.

“Responding, she said, ‘Don’t abuse me, if you abuse me, I will abuse you.’ And I didn’t abuse her.

“She claimed I called her a bastard. I refuted it. I told her I didn’t call her bastard. She pushed me and I fell to the ground. If I knew the gravity of the offence, I would have recorded the video of the incident on Thursday.”

Meanwhile, the Head of Information and Public Relations of NYSC in Kwara State, Morakinyo Oladipo, who confirmed the development, said NYSC would seek redress on the alleged attack against the corper, as the state government has been briefed on the matter through the state Ministry of Youths.

Morakinyo said that in the interim, the corper will be redeployed out of the vicinity to calm her down and help her overcome the trauma of the alleged assault.
