The Jigawa State and Local Governments Contributory Pension Scheme Board has released more than N1.4 billion in pension and related benefits to 564 beneficiaries in the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Binyaminu Shitu Aminu, made this known during a briefing with journalists on Monday.
He explained that the approved sum of N1,429,201,208.92 covers retirement benefits, death benefits, and outstanding death pension balances.
He said 485 retired civil servants received N1,191,804,237.17 as their retirement entitlements, while N226,547,197.84 was paid to the families of 71 deceased workers.
In addition, N10,849,773.91 was disbursed to the families of eight pensioners as outstanding death pension balances.
Dr. Aminu assured that the board remains committed to the prompt payment of pensions and other entitlements, noting that monthly pensions are paid regularly on the first day of every month.
Speaking earlier at the Pension House before the exercise commenced, the Jigawa State Accountant General, Alhaji Abdullahi S.G. Shehu, described state’s pension system as among the best in Nigeria.
He reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Umar Namadi to the welfare of serving and retired civil servants, adding that the state’s pension framework has become a reference for other states.
According to him, since taking office in May 2023, Governor Namadi has injected over N11 billion into the pension scheme to strengthen and sustain its effectiveness.
