The member representing Ikwuano-Umuahia Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, Obi Aguocha, says he was surprised that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, took over the defense of his own case in court.

Aguocha expressed his shock on Thursday when he appeared as a guest on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television monitored by DAILY POST.

He said it was the IPOB leader’s constitutional right that adequate time and facilities be provided for him to ensure he has adequate defense.

DAILY POST reports that Nnamdi Kanu, on Thursday in open court, sacked his lawyers defending him against the terrorism charges brought by the Federal Government.

Reacting, the lawmaker said: “Nnamdi Kanu had discussions with the legal team yesterday. All of us were shocked when we came to court and the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Godwin Kanu Agabi, announced to the court that he and the legal team, especially those of the inner temple, were withdrawing.

“The judge also was shocked and asked Nnamdi Kanu about it, and he concurred that, for now, he would take charge of his defense. It doesn’t mean that if tomorrow another opportunity arises, lawyers won’t be part of him, but for now, he would take charge of his defense. So that was what happened in court.

“I was pleasantly surprised that Nnamdi Kanu took over the defense of his own case. I was surprised and shocked at the same time because none of us knew about it. I came to court just as I have always done, attending the court hearings and all of that.

“It is his constitutional right that adequate time and facilities be provided for him to ensure he has adequate defense,” Aguocha stated.
