INEC: 17 Political Parties to Contest FCT Area Council Elections

• Says 5.4m Nigerians register for CVR after fifth week

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that 17 political parties will contest for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections.

The electoral body had scheduled the FCT Area Council elections to be held on Saturday February 21, 2026.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed in a statement on Monday following the publication of the final list of candidates

He recalled that on August 18, 2025, the commission published the personal particulars of candidates that emerged from primaries conducted by political parties.

He stressed that a  total of 17 political parties uploaded the particulars of their candidates (Form EC9) by the deadline of 6.00pm on Monday, August 11, 2025 and at the end of the period for withdrawal and substitution of candidates.

“Consequently, the commission hereby publishes the final list of candidates that will contest in the 2026 FCT Area Council Election,” Olumekun noted.

He added that the full list of the candidates by party, age, gender and academic qualifications has been uploaded to its website and social media platforms for public information.

“With this publication, no further withdrawal or replacement of candidates will be allowed except in the event of death of a candidate or running mate before Election Day as provided by Section 34(1) of the Electoral Act,” Olumekun said.

Meanwhile, the commission has revealed that online registration for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) has hit 5,385,060 after the fifth week.

It said females constitute 2,799,844, while the males: 2,585,216; whereas the youths between ages 18 and 34 constitute 3,604,668; students – 1,354,274 and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) constitute 114,713

The commission noted that a total of 764,695 online and physical registration were completed after week four; out of which 418,750 are females, 345,945 males; youths (18-34): 565,927; students: 279,172 and PWDs constitute 10,838.

    A few days ago, I had the opportunity to listen to Timi Dakolo vent on his experience with the Royal Air Maroc airline and his misplaced bags.. In the video, he appealed to the Airline to find and return his bags.

    From what I was able to gather, Timi’s experience is not an isolated incident. Many travellers shared similar stories in the comments section, highlighting a pattern of luggage mishandling. I am curious to know how Royal Air Maroc will handle this incident, but I am not holding my breath.

    Personally, I am not surprised that the Royal Air Maroc is doing this. Some international airlines show real and perceived disparity in treatment, and others will prioritise customers in certain countries over others.

    Air Maroc is not doing anything new. It’s just that presently, they are in the spotlight.

    The question we should ask ourselves is, are we helping matters? Should charity not begin for us, at home??

    We delay domestic flights for so-called ‘operational reasons’. Offering no refunds, no change of ticket, and in some instances, no explanation. Just a silence.

    Foreign airlines see what we do to ourselves and file it away. They see the disdain and contempt with which our homegrown Customer Care services treat us, but by some stretch of imagination, we expect the foreigners to treat us better than we treat ourselves. What an irony!

    With all the domestic and international delays on our indigenous airlines, none of our airlines has ever offered a refund or voluntarily provided another ticket?

    Which of them has ever been made an example of?

    Nigeria has not put in place a framework that holds airlines accountable to Nigerian citizens. In the United Kingdom, there’s a platform called the Resolver, which is a great example of Consumer protection mechanisms.

    Any member of the public with a dispute with a company can quite literally log in the details, and they do the work for you.

    Every financial complaint has an eight week deadline to be resolved, before it goes to a Financial Ombudsman.

    When the case is taken up by the Ombudsman, the company or airline has to pay 650 pounds, and this is regardless of if the ruling is in their favour. Many airlines would rather amicably settle disputes than have to pay 650 everytime a disgruntled fliers has a case..

    In the UK, if a train is delayed for more than thirty minutes, the commuter is entitled to a fifty percent refund.

    Timi Dakolo should not have had to resort to social media. There should have been a framework in place where he could log in.

    A portal in place where people can go to, and log their complaints. And in turn, they will hold the airlines accountable.

    If NCARs had a policy of a financial penalty for each unresolved complaint, Airlines would have incentives to solve complaints, and sit up. This would mean better service for Nigerians.

    Today, July 25, 2025, marks more than 26 days since Timi Dakolo’s luggage went missing on a Royal Air Maroc flight. According to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (NCARs), a luggage is deemed permanently and totally lost if not found after 21 days for international flights. As per Part 19 of the NCARs, he is entitled to compensation for lost luggage.

    The NCAA mandates airlines to pay $170 for international flights and N10,000 for domestic flights as initial compensation while searching for missing luggage. Given the elapsed time, I would expect Royal Air Maroc to provide a clear update on the status of his luggage or pay the compensation.

    I also appeal to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to look into this matter, ensuring Royal Air Maroc adheres to the regulations and provides a resolution to my issue. Any flier, either domestic or international, pays airport taxes, and all rights should be protected. Timi Dakolo’s situation highlights a concerning gap between the Nigerian Civil Aviation regulations NCARs and it’s implementation.

    We await to see how this will be resolved.

    UNICEF Expert Calls for Stronger Stakeholder Action to End Female Genital Mutilation in Nigeria by 2030

    A Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Development Expert with UNICEF, AderonkeOlutayo, yesterday, called for stronger coordination and collaboration among stakeholders to eliminate the harmful practice of FGM in Nigeria by 2030.

    Speaking at a two-day media dialogue in Edo State organised by the Oyo State Ministry of Information and Orientation in partnership with UNICEF, Olutayo stressed the involvement of men and boys is crucial in driving change, particularly in communities where FGM is most prevalent.

    She described FGM as a deep-rooted cultural and traditional practice that continues to endanger the health and rights of girls and women. According to her, survivors often face shame and denial, while lacking access to psychosocial support and healthcare.

    “In many communities, FGM is still regarded as a rite of passage and a marital requirement. It is wrongly seen as a way to preserve purity and control sexuality,” she stated.

    Olutayo highlighted several barriers that hinder efforts to end the practice, including the absence of safe and confidential reporting systems, fear of stigma and social exclusion, limited awareness of laws protecting women and girls, and the silence of many survivors who continue to live with trauma.

    Citing a case in Igboho, Oyo State, where community members admitted that female genitals were being used for rituals, she reiterated the importance of engaging men in advocacy against FGM.

    The UNICEF expert further called for stronger capacity-building for patent medicine vendors, doctors, nurses, and midwives, alongside improved referral systems and coordination across health, justice, media, and law enforcement sectors.

    In his presentation, Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF, Denis Onoise stated that FGM has serious implications for the sexual and reproductive health of girls and women, adding the practice is prevalent in Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and Edo states.

    “Women and girls have right to the highest attainable standards of health, right to life and physical integrity including freedom from violence,” he said.

    Earlier in her remarks, Celine Lafoucrier, Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office, described the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria as both urgent and achievable, warning the country cannot afford to ignore the scale of the crisis.

    According to her, nearly 20 million women and girls in Nigeria have undergone FGM, making the country the third highest globally.

    Most of the survivors, she stressed, were cut before the age of five, a stage when they were “completely powerless, unable to consent, resist, or even understand what was happening.”

    Despite being outlawed, the practice continues across many communities, driven by myths and cultural traditions. Lafoucrier who spoke virtually, insisted that “no culture or custom should ever come at the expense of girls’ health, rights or their future.”

    She, however, expressed optimism that the tide is turning, pointing to the Movement for Good, a Federal Government initiative in collaboration with UNICEF, which is working to dismantle harmful beliefs and protect future generations of Nigerian girls.

    “Change is possible, and change is happening,” she affirmed.
