In light of the recent devastating flood disaster that struck Maiduguri metropolis and other surrounding local government areas, the Borno State Government has decided to scale down its Independence Day celebration this year.

The State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, announced the decision, emphasising the need for collective reflection and solidarity during this challenging time.

DAILY POST recalls that the flood caused severe destruction, affecting hundreds of families and damaging vital infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, roads and bridges.

Tar noted that Governor Babagana Umara Zulum once again expressed deep sympathy for everyone affected and called on citizens to unite in prayers for the state and nation as a whole.

The statement quoted the Governor expressing the need to focus on supporting and standing in solidarity with those affected by the September 10 flood disaster, while celebrating the independence anniversary as well as to pray for recovery and strength, not only for Borno State but for all of Nigeria.

“Government will redirect resources and efforts towards rehabilitation of infrastructures that were destroyed by the flood and provide relief to the people, ensuring that affected families receive the necessary aid and support”, he said.

Governor Zulum reassured the people of the state that the Borno State government was actively coordinating with the disbursement committee to expedite relief measures and ensure efficient distribution of aid.
