The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) on Saturday laid to rest Assistant Immigration Control Officer I (AICO I) Cosmos Dakurah, who was tragically killed in an ambush by unknown assailants while on duty.
Officer Dakurah was murdered on 2 November 2025 at Pulimakom in the Upper East Region, an attack that also left his colleague, AICO I Philip Lartey, injured and receiving treatment in hospital.
The funeral rites for the fallen officer were held at his hometown of Badigriyiri-Konzokala in the Jirapa Municipality, with the service describing him as a “true martyr” whose bravery would continue to inspire generations of officers.
In a tribute, the Comptroller-General and Management of the GIS reaffirmed their “steadfast commitment to stand by the families of fallen officers,” ensuring their courage and service are duly recognised.
The solemn ceremony was marked by a 21-gun salute and the laying of three wreaths on behalf of the Comptroller-General, the Upper West Regional Commander and staff, and the Service.
The Upper West Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI) Justice Bosomvi-Ayensu, represented the Comptroller-General at the burial. He was accompanied by other senior officers, including the Upper East Regional Commander, DCOI Lawrence Agyemang Bosompem.
In a related development, the GIS confirmed that AICO I Philip Lartey, who was attacked alongside the late Officer Dakurah in the Tempane District, is still receiving treatment for his injuries.
Lartey was initially treated at the Basonde Clinic before being transferred to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. The Service has confirmed that he is currently out of danger.
Investigations into the ambush are ongoing as the GIS works to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The GIS, in a news release signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Immigration for Public Affairs, Maud Anima Quainoo, extended its “sincere condolences to the family of Officer Dakurah and prays for strength and comfort during this difficult time.”
The service added that Officer Dakurah’s “legacy of courage and dedication will forever remain a guiding light for the Service and the nation.”
