The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has given assurances that the government is making steady progress on securing funds to facilitate ongoing construction works at the La General Hospital project site.
According to him, the second Interim Payment Certificate (IPC) for contractors has been raised and formally submitted to the Ministry of Finance for processing, paving the way for the release of funds to sustain the construction.
“With the records available, the second IPC has been raised as I indicated during my first admission. We have forwarded it to the Minister of Finance. That is the process—we can’t pay without the IPC,” he stated.
He added that both he and the Member of Parliament have made follow-ups with the Finance Ministry, adding that his most recent engagement with the Minister of Finance was just a day before his visit to the project site.
“The Minister of Finance is committed to ensuring that funds are released for this project to progress. I am happy that today I have come to see the workers on site, and they are willing to make progress,” he said.
Mr Akandoh, who was visiting the site for the first time in his current capacity as Health Minister, assured that his outfit will continue to monitor the project closely to avoid delays and ensure timely completion.
He emphasised that once the financial processes are cleared and payments are made on schedule, contractors will have no excuse not to deliver according to the agreed timelines.
“It is my responsibility as sector Minister to make sure that this project progresses and is finally completed. We want to ensure contractors are paid on time,” he said.
He also described engagements with contractors as “fair and necessary,” stating that it was important for them to directly communicate their financial constraints to him as Minister.
“Every contractor, when he or she gets the opportunity to meet the Minister and has a financial challenge, it is only fair to put it before the Minister,” he added.
The Health Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to the redevelopment of the La General Hospital and assured residents that the project remains a priority under his watch.
