The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Monday, 3 November 2025, appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to respond to queries on financial irregularities captured in the Auditor-General’s report.
Addressing the Committee, Mr. Iddrisu expressed concern over what he described as Parliament’s failure to safeguard public funds, citing Article 187(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires lawmakers to debate the Auditor-General’s findings and take corrective action in the public interest.
“We have failed to protect the public purse and hold state institutions accountable for financial irregularities. Sovereignty resides in the people,” he said.
The Minister also cautioned heads of second-cycle institutions against charging unapproved fees, warning that any school authorities found culpable would face severe sanctions.
He appealed to the Ministry of Finance to ensure the timely release of funds to support the implementation of the Free Tertiary Education Policy.
Also appearing before the Committee was the Minister for Communications, Technology and Digitalisation, Sam George, who addressed infractions involving agencies under his ministry, including the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).
“I am accountable to the Ghanaian people, not to any private entity. I will do everything possible to uphold that responsibility,” he stated.
Mr. George revealed that a contract involving Infraco Smart Ghana Limited, which owes the state US$6 million, has been referred to the Attorney-General’s Office for legal advice and possible prosecution.
The Committee’s public hearings are still ongoing.
