A non-governmental organisation, Street to School (S2S) Initiative, has cautioned students against involvement in cybercrime and sports betting, saying it could derail their future.

Founder and Executive Director of the organisation, Mrs Oluwatosin Olowoyeye-Taiwo, made the call during a career day seminar, titled ‘Future Ready’, at Estate Grammar School, Ipaja, Lagos.

The event, organised in collaboration with Education District I, sought to engage high school students with the ever-evolving landscape on the future of work.

Olowoyeye-Taiwo lamented that young people at the grassroots were getting lured by the flamboyant lifestyles of some fraudulent Internet influencers.

She said many parents were encouraging their children in sports betting by sending them to play on their behalf. According to her, some students had already mastered the trend from their parents, making it difficult to dissuade them.

She urged the government to curb the disturbing scenario because of its negative impact on children’s future.

“A child that wins money through betting will always want to go back and make more money. Parents must understand that they have to be good examples. They must be good role models at home,” she said.

Olowoyeye-Taiwo said the programme hoped to motivate students to think proactively about their career choices and the skills they need to succeed.

She said: “By fostering a future-ready mindset, we empower students to navigate their careers with confidence and adaptability, ensuring they are well prepared for the opportunities and challenges ahead.

“As the workforce rapidly transforms due to advancements in technology and shifts in global demands, it’s crucial for students to understand and prepare for these changes. Through a series of interactive sessions, expert talks, and hands-on workshops, we aim to equip students with knowledge about emerging industries, critical skills, and innovative career paths.

“Students had the opportunity to explore fields such as artificial intelligence, sustainable technologies, and creative industries, gaining insights into how these areas are shaping the future job market.”

A representative of the Lagos State Tutor-General, Ayodele Adeyemi, urged the students to shun social vices and embrace the programme because it had the potential to elevate their future.

One of the resource persons and founder of Media Mentors Leadership Academy, Ms Joke Kujenya, urged students to avoid cybercrime and prostitution.

Expressing appreciation, the Head Girl of Estate Grammar School, Ipaja, Akala Taiwo Tinuoluwa, described the event as inspiring and encouraging, especially for students who do not know the careers to pursue.
