GRA Boss urges media support for major tax overhaul

The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, has called for a deeper and more consistent partnership between the Authority and the media as Ghana prepares to roll out major tax policy reforms outlined in the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy.

Addressing editors and members of the GRA Press Corps in Accra on Thursday, 20 November 2025, Mr Sarpong said the evolving tax environment, including forthcoming amendments to the VAT Act, Income Tax Act and Customs Act, requires clear, continuous and simplified communication to ensure public understanding and voluntary compliance.

Describing the media as a vital partner in tax administration, he commended journalists for their role in public education, saying their work “lights the path” for awareness and behavioural change.

He noted that technological upgrades, regulatory adjustments and new administrative processes planned for the coming years would only succeed if taxpayers fully appreciate how the reforms affect them.

“Paying taxes comes with hesitancy for many people, especially when they do not understand the system,” Mr Sarpong said.

“If we journey with you, the men and women of the media, during this time of change, it becomes easier and more convenient to convey the message to all taxpayers.”

The Commissioner-General added that the media’s involvement goes beyond information-sharing, noting that journalists also provide critical feedback that helps the GRA address operational challenges and improve its efficiency.

He encouraged media practitioners to equip themselves with deeper knowledge of tax obligations to enable them to educate the public accurately and confidently.

In a light moment, Mr Sarpong asked how many of those present had filed their 2024 tax returns, only a few hands went up.

He said the response did not reflect reluctance but underscored the need for greater awareness and simpler filing processes.

With sustained education, he said, future engagements would record far higher levels of compliance.

Reaffirming the GRA’s tagline, “Understand your taxes, pay your taxes, and let’s build Ghana together,” Mr Sarpong appealed to journalists to serve as ambassadors for tax education through their reporting and daily interactions with the public.

He concluded by expressing appreciation for the strong turnout and reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to constructive collaboration: “Thank you for coming in your numbers. We look forward to a fruitful partnership that strengthens Ghana’s tax system.”
