The government is set to begin paying outstanding debts owed to road contractors across the country by the end of July 2025. This was announced by President John Dramani Mahama during a meeting with the Council of State on Monday, July 7.

According to President Mahama, the Ministry of Finance has concluded arrangements to start the long-awaited payments within this month to enable contractors to return to project sites and resume work.

“I’m sure that some of the contractors who have been working on your projects will be paid so that they can go back on site and continue their work,” President Mahama stated.

The President further explained that the decision is part of the government’s broader effort to revitalise stalled infrastructure projects, support economic recovery, and restore confidence among local contractors who have long decried delayed payments.

The prolonged non-payment of arrears has left many contractors financially strained, forcing some to abandon sites and lay off workers. With the planned disbursement, it is expected that several road projects will soon see renewed activity, ultimately improving road networks and boosting economic activities in affected communities.

While President Mahama did not disclose the exact amount to be released, he assured that the payments would be significant enough to make an immediate impact.
