Government will tackle Jasikan township and other roads – MCE assures residents

By Benjamin Makafui Attipoe, Jasikan

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Jasikan in the Oti Region, Parke-Davis Magyigbe, has assured the chiefs and people of the municipality that government would definitely tackle the deplorable Jasikan Township roads.

Speaking in an interview with our newsteam at Jasikan, Mr Magyigbe, said some other major roads linking the municipality and other sister districts and municipalities of the region, would also be given total facelift under the Big Push initiative of the President, John Dramani Mahama.

The Jasikan District was established on 10th March, 1989 under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 1464 from the former Buem-Krachi Districts. It is one of the oldest districts under the then Volta Region but now among the nine (9) administrative districts and municipalities of the current Oti Region.

On 11th May, 2021, the Jasikan District became a municipality when its original status of an Ordinary District Assembly was changed. The Municipal capital, Jasikan is located along the famous Eastern Corridor road. It serves not only as a local business hub for the Buem enclave but also known for its natural landscape and cultural significance. The Jasikan community is also an important hub for the production and trading of cocoa.

In spite of the strong economic potentials of the municipality, its road networks are nothing to write home about. The Jasikan Township roads are not only bedeviled with several potholes but also characterized by poor drainage systems some of which have become death traps.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Parke-Davis Magyigbe, told our newsteam in an interview that the Jasikan Township roads, as well as many other roads in the municipality have been on his heart since he assumed office as the representative of the President in the municipality.

According to him, the Assembly together with the office of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Kofi Iddie Adams, have been engaging the needed authorities on the issue.

He explained that feasibility works have been done and estimates submitted accordingly with officials from the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) also visiting the municipality to carry out further assessment on the roads.

The MCE thanked the residents of the municipality for their patience and sacrifice and assured them that the Jasikan Township roads alongside other equally important roads in the municipality, would be tackled.

Mr Magyigbe, announced that under the Big Push initiative of the President, major roads such as the Jasikan-Bodada-Baika-Lolobi, Jasikan-Worawora, Jasikan-Okagyakrom-Kwamekrom as well as the Jasikan-Atonkor-Akaa-Abotoase, would all be fixed.

“President Mahama has also promised that every year, ten (10) kilometers of our roads would also be constructed. I therefore want to assure the good people of the Jasikan municipality that we are doing everything humanly possible to get our roads fixed”, the MCE intimated.

The MCE, said whiles waiting for the intervention of central government, the Municipal Assembly itself is doing its best to put some of the roads in the municipality in good shape with the help of the available District Road Improvement Project (DRIP) equipment. According to the MCE, the poor feeder and other remote area roads that need reshaping would be worked on as and when the need arises.

The MCE reiterated government’s resolve and commitment to construct the much-awaited public university for the Oti Region at Jasikan.

According to him, all documentations have been done whiles officials from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the contractors have also visited the site to undertake some preliminary work. ‘In due course, the President would be here to cut sod for the construction of the University’, Mr Magyigbe emphasized.
