A potentially crippling strike by the Ghana Air Traffic Safety Electronics Association (GhATSEA) has been suspended, safeguarding the seamless operation of the nation’s airspace. The strike, which was slated to begin on 30th October 2025, was called off following what the Association describes as “constructive engagement” with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
In a press release dated 29th October, GhATSEA announced the decision, effectively averting significant disruptions to domestic and international flights. The Association, which represents the critical engineers responsible for maintaining and repairing the electronic systems that guide aircraft safely through Ghanaian airspace, expressed optimism about the ongoing discussions.
“We appreciate the efforts made by all stakeholders during the discussions and remain optimistic that the ongoing engagements will lead to a lasting resolution of all outstanding issues,” the statement read.
While the specific grievances that prompted the strike threat were not detailed in the release, the suspension indicates a significant step forward in negotiations between the engineers and the GCAA management and governing board.
The statement also included a direct assurance to the public and aviation partners, emphasizing the engineers’ unwavering commitment to safety. “GhATSEA assures the public, our partners, and all aviation stakeholders that we remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and professionalism,” it affirmed.
Gratitude was extended to the GCAA’s Acting Director-General, Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, and Acting Deputy Director-General Technical, Mr. Theophlus Aryee Ago, for their role in the negotiations. The Association also thanked the media and the public for their patience.
This development underscores the critical, often unseen, role that air traffic safety engineers play in the backbone of a nation’s aviation infrastructure. With the strike action suspended, attention now turns to the negotiating table, where all parties will work to secure a durable agreement for the future of Ghana’s aviation sector.
