Ghana sailed through to the men’s 4x100m final after setting the fastest time in the heats at the 2025 World Athletics Championships on Saturday, 20 September.
The final will be the last event on the schedule at these Worlds, providing a thrilling finale to Tokyo 25 on Sunday 21 September
Abdul-Rasheed Saminu anchored Ghana to victory in heat 2, leading the team home in a national record 37.79 seconds to book their place in Sunday’s gold medal race.
After running the third leg for Ghana, Joseph Paul Amoah spoke about what it means to him to race for his nation at these Worlds:
“I respond every time I am called to represent the country,” he said. “Ibrahim (Fuseini) and Benjamin (Azamati) put us in a good position, and I did my job for Abdul-Rasheed (Saminu) to finish.”
Saminu, who led the team to victory on the final leg, added, “Lane two is not an easy job, but I trust my teammates and they brought me the baton safely. I just had to finish.”
In the first heat, Canada claimed first place in a season-best time of 37.85, with the USA – without Noah Lyles – coming second in 37.98.
Canada’s Brendon Rodney expressed his excitement for a tougher challenge in the final, in which Lyles is expected to race.
“We’re looking forward to coming with our strongest team,” he said. “We want to beat everybody at full strength. We’ll look at the tape, and we’ll figure out what we need to improve on this for tomorrow.”
As is so often the case in the relays, failed baton handovers made the headlines, and this time around, Jamaica were the biggest losers. A mix-up between Ryiem Forde and Kishane Thompson ended with them dropping the baton heading into the final leg of heat 1, and missing out on a place in the final.
After both heats concluded, the other nations to claim an automatic spot in the final were the Netherlands, Japan and Germany.
