Ghana has called on the military authorities in Guinea-Bissau to immediately safeguard the lives and rights of citizens from all countries following last week’s sudden military takeover.
In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 26, 2025, Ghana described the military action as “an assault on democratic governance” and a direct disruption of the nation’s electoral process.
The statement noted that the coup occurred just days after the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on 23 November, whose results were expected to be announced on 27 November.
Ghana expressed deep concern over what it called a “brazen attempt” to overturn the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau and warned that the takeover had dangerously interrupted the country’s democratic trajectory.
Central to Ghana’s message was its demand that Guinea-Bissau’s new military authorities ensure the safety of all residents, especially foreign nationals who may be vulnerable due to the sudden unrest.
The Ministry emphasised the particular need to protect officials of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, who remain in the country and whose safety Ghana said must be guaranteed without delay.
According to the statement, Ghana is urging the actors behind the takeover to resolve any electoral grievances only through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised mechanisms.
It added that the use of force to alter political outcomes undermines regional stability and violates ECOWAS and African Union principles on constitutional governance.
Ghana further appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions, even as the situation continues to unfold.
The Ministry reaffirmed Ghana’s full support for ECOWAS and the African Union as both bodies coordinate a collective response to the crisis.
It stressed that the restoration of constitutional order is essential for safeguarding democracy, protecting civilians and preventing wider instability in the region.
