Ghana, Burkina Faso seal Roaming Pact as govt sets 2026 deadline for full digital payments

Ghana and Burkina Faso have taken a major step toward deepening digital integration in West Africa, following the signing of a landmark free roaming agreement during this year’s Digital Week.

The move is expected to significantly enhance cross-border mobile communication and ease the cost burden on citizens who frequently travel between the two countries.

Under the agreement, mobile users will be able to communicate more seamlessly across both territories, with reduced roaming charges and improved service quality. The measure is aimed at strengthening economic cooperation, boosting sub-regional trade, and supporting the social ties that bind communities along the shared border.

The decision is also seen as part of a broader regional push to harmonise digital policies and infrastructure, allowing West African states to better compete within the global digital economy.

Meanwhile, in a separate but related development, the Government of Ghana has announced a definitive timeline for the full digitisation of public sector payments. By 2026, all government transactions—including salaries, service payments, and internal transfers—will be executed exclusively through secure electronic platforms.

This shift will mark the complete elimination of manual cheque payments across government institutions. Authorities insist that moving entirely to digital platforms is critical to reducing fraud, closing leakages, and improving transparency and efficiency within the public financial management system.

According to officials, the transition will not only modernise the public sector but also contribute to a more accountable and resilient financial ecosystem—one capable of supporting Ghana’s long-term development goals in an era where digital governance is becoming indispensable.

As Ghana pushes ahead with its digital reforms and deepens cross-border cooperation, the latest initiatives signal a clear commitment to building a more connected, efficient, and future-ready West African region.

The petition alleged irregularities in both the voting and collation processes, which, it argued, affected the credibility of the declared outcome. The suit was filed by Daniel Nsala Wakpal, former…
