Ghana Armed Forces probes soldiers over alleged mining extortion

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed it is working with the Ghana Police Service to investigate allegations of extortion involving two of its personnel and civilian accomplices at a mining site in the Western Region.

According to a press release dated 2 October and issued by the Department of Public Relations, the incident allegedly occurred on Sunday, 28 September 2025, at LongShine Mining Company Limited in Prestea-Obouhu.

The statement, signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, stressed that the military will not shield any soldier found guilty of criminal activity.

“If found culpable, the personnel will face the law like any other citizen of Ghana,” the release stated.

Earlier this week two soldiers and two civilians were arrested after a botched attempt to extort operators at the mining site.

Videos circulating on social media show men in military uniforms being escorted by police, fuelling public debate about military involvement in illegal mining activities.
