Hot SourceThe Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a clarification, following widespread reports suggesting a full return to the single-track system for the upcoming academic year.
According to GES, the 2025/2026 academic calendar makes room for both single-track and double-track systems, contrary to claims in sections of the media that the double-track arrangement had been completely phased out.
In a statement released over the weekend, the Public Relations Officer of the GES, Mr Daniel Fenyi, emphasized that the dual system still remains in place to accommodate schools with infrastructure limitations.
“In the spirit of transparent and honest communication, the Ghana Education Service wishes to clarify that the 2025/2026 academic calendar has not fully reverted to the single-track system, as reported in some sections of the media,” Mr. Fenyi stated.
He explained that the updated calendar, which was made public last week, outlines different end-of-year dates for schools depending on which system they operate under.
All first-year students are to report on Saturday, 18th October 2025, while the end date for Single-Track schools will be on Thursday, 21st August 2026 and for the end date for Double-Track schools, it will be Thursday, 4th September 2026.
The double-track system was introduced in 2018 to help manage overcrowding in Senior High Schools following the rollout of the Free SHS policy.
Though some schools have since transitioned back to the single-track model, others continue to operate on the double-track due to space and resource constraints.
Mr Fenyi, noted that GES remains committed to ensuring all students receive quality education regardless of the system their school operates under.
“This academic calendar reflects the current realities on the ground. It ensures smooth academic progression for all students, while infrastructure development continues,” he said.
GES, has encouraged parents, students, and school administrators to pay close attention to the specific dates and operational models applicable to their respective schools.
