Germany has pledged €49 million to support the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in advancing peace, security, economic development and health initiatives across the subregion.
The commitment follows successful bilateral negotiations on development cooperation held between ECOWAS and the German Government at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, on 4 and 5 November 2025.
The new funding is aimed at deepening collaboration between Germany and ECOWAS to promote stability, good governance and sustainable growth in West Africa. It will also enhance institutional capacity within the ECOWAS Commission and strengthen regional mechanisms for health and security.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to building on decades of cooperation in areas such as conflict prevention, regional integration, public health and economic transformation.
According to ECOWAS officials, the renewed partnership demonstrates Germany’s continued trust in the regional bloc’s role as a driver of peace and development in West Africa. The support will also contribute to ECOWAS’s ongoing programmes in conflict resolution, economic resilience and public health systems strengthening.
Germany remains one of ECOWAS’s most reliable partners, working through institutions such as GIZ and KfW to implement regional projects that advance peacebuilding, social cohesion, and inclusive development.
The bilateral negotiations form part of a broader framework of cooperation between the two partners, reflecting their shared vision for a stable, prosperous and secure West African region.
