Hot SourceGhana has been thrown into mourning following the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
She reportedly passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra on Thursday, aged 76.
The family is yet to issue an official statement confirming the cause of death.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was widely respected as one of Ghana’s most influential women, a political figure, gender advocate, and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, which championed women’s empowerment and socio-economic development across the country.
Born in 1948, she served as First Lady from 1981 to 2001 during her husband’s leadership under both the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Known for her charisma and strong advocacy for women’s participation in governance, she left an indelible mark on Ghana’s political and social landscape.
In later years, she established the National Democratic Party (NDP) and contested the 2016 general elections, becoming the first woman to run for president in Ghana.
