Five dead, four rescued in Asikuma Junction crash

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that five people have died following a road accident at Asikuma Junction in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

According to the GNFS, nine people were involved in the crash. Four survivors, including a minor, were rescued and transported to the Peki Government Hospital by the National Ambulance Service, while five others were found unresponsive and handed over to the police.

The Service said in a statement that the Peki Fire Station received a distress call and quickly dispatched a rescue team to the scene.

The accident involved a grey Toyota Noah with registration number GX 422-25 and a tipper truck with registration number GT 725-19.

The GNFS commended the swift collaboration between its personnel, the National Ambulance Service, and the police in managing the rescue operation.

Meanwhile, data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) show that Ghana recorded 7,289 road crashes and 1,504 deaths between January and June 2025.

The provisional statistics, compiled in collaboration with the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), indicate that 12,354 vehicles were involved in various accidents within the period, leaving 8,300 people injured and 1,301 pedestrians knocked down nationwide.

The NRSA further noted that, on average, eight lives are lost each day due to road crashes, 40 accidents occur daily across the country, 46 people are injured every day, and 69 vehicles and motorcycles are involved in such incidents.

The Authority has since reiterated the need for stricter enforcement of road traffic regulations and continuous public sensitisation to help curb the increasing rate of road accidents.
