Father of Burma Camp Pharmacy assault victim named

More details have emerged regarding the viral video showing a soldier physically assaulting two civilians at a pharmacy in Burma Camp.

The military officer, now identified as Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Williams Mensah, is seen in CCTV footage brutally attacking the pharmacy attendant and a female customer.

One of the victims has been confirmed as the daughter of Brigadier General Jackson Wonje, the Acting Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC).

Initial reports indicated that WO1 Mensah assaulted the victims after demanding a refund of approximately GH¢65 for medication he had sent a boy to purchase, which he later rejected. The pharmacy attendant reportedly informed him that drugs sold could not be returned, sparking the violent altercation.

Media personality Fred Duhoe, in a detailed account shared on Facebook, has provided further context to the incident. He stated that WO1 Mensah sent his son to buy a dewormer, and the boy was presented with three options at the pharmacy.

He selected one costing GH¢65, which the soldier rejected upon his return home, insisting on a refund.

According to Duhoe, the soldier first called the pharmacy through his son’s phone and was informed of its “no refund” policy for medicines. Dissatisfied, he returned to the pharmacy in person, where he assaulted both the attendant and the female customer, identified as the daughter of a two-star general who was present to buy medication.

Her attempt to record the incident reportedly triggered further aggression from WO1 Mensah, who slapped and beat her even after she had stepped outside the pharmacy. The pharmacy later refunded the GH¢65 upon his second return to the shop.

The victims were treated at the 37 Military Hospital and subsequently discharged. Military Police have since arrested WO1 Mensah.

Brigadier General Jackson Wonje was enlisted into the Ghana Military Academy in 1990 and commissioned into the Infantry Corps on 14 August 1992. He has served in various senior roles across the Ghana Armed Forces, including Platoon Commander and Acting Officer Commanding, 5th Infantry Battalion,

Adjutant and Officer Commanding Special Investigations Branch, Ghana Military Police and Directing Staff at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (Junior and Senior Divisions)

First Command Operations Officer, Northern Command, Commander, Operation Vanguard (2018–2019), Chief Instructor, Army Faculty, GAFCSC, Director of Studies, Rwanda Defence Force Command and Staff College, Chief of Staff, Ghana Boundary Commission and Before his current appointment, he served as Provost Marshal of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Brig Gen Wonje holds postgraduate qualifications in Public Administration from GIMPA, an LLB from the University of London, and an LLM from the University of Ghana.

He was called to the Bar in 2018. He has extensive peacekeeping experience with ECOWAS and the United Nations in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Lebanon, Western Sahara and Côte d’Ivoire.
