At least seven members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) recently lost their lives in an explosion while they were in the process of assembling improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Naija News understands that this incident took place on December 30, 2024, in an area situated between Ba’anfani and Koleram within the remote Lake Chad Basin of Borno state.

In a publication on Tuesday morning, a counterinsurgency expert concentrating on the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, quoted sources to have revealed that the explosion occurred during the construction of the IEDs, which the terrorists were likely preparing for planned attacks in the region.

The Lake Chad Basin has become a focal point for ISWAP operations, with the group often employing IEDs as a key component of its terror strategies in a desperate effort to maintain its influence.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Special Forces engaged in Operation Fansan Yanma have been actively patrolling communities along the Sokoto border to address threats from the insurgent group known as Lakurawa, which is believed to have established a presence in the region.

According to intelligence reports shared with Makama, these patrols have systematically covered all communities adjacent to the border as part of a proactive strategy to safeguard residents and thwart any potential attacks.

Despite the rigorous operations, no evidence of the group’s activities or presence was discovered around the Balle KARDULA Border during the patrols.

The troops also spoke with several local residents, who reported not having seen any foreigners or members of the Lakurawa group.

The local population expressed a sense of relief due to the military’s presence, indicating that it has helped to restore their confidence.
