ECOWAS trains journalists in Guinea Bissau to tackle misinformation and strengthen information integrity

The ECOWAS Commission has begun a two-day capacity-building programme for journalists and media practitioners in Guinea Bissau aimed at strengthening information integrity and countering the growing threat of misinformation, disinformation, fake news, and anti-democratic narratives across West Africa.

The training, organised through the ECOWAS Directorate of Communication in partnership with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and supported by the Government of Germany, is scheduled for 17–18 November 2025.

It forms part of regional efforts to promote Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and enhance the media’s role in safeguarding peace, democracy, and good governance.

Participants are expected to receive hands-on skills in detecting misinformation networks, improving conflict-sensitive reporting, and promoting factual, responsible journalism in a rapidly evolving media environment.

Speaking on behalf of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr Omar Alieu Touray, the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Guinea Bissau, H.E. Ambassador Ngozi Ukeje, emphasised the Commission’s continued commitment to supporting Member States and media professionals in the fight against harmful and misleading narratives.

She described the media as a critical partner in strengthening political governance, noting that accurate information remains central to peace, security, and regional stability.

“The commitment of ECOWAS to promoting an informed and resilient media landscape is unwavering. As misinformation increasingly threatens democratic processes and social cohesion, equipping journalists with the right tools is essential,” Ambassador Ukeje said.

The training brings together media personnel from various outlets in Guinea Bissau and forms part of a broader ECOWAS agenda to reinforce democratic values and build a more informed citizenry across West Africa.
