Ministers from member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, from 7 to 8 October 2025, to deliberate on the rotation and allocation of statutory positions within the regional body for the 2026–2030 term.
The ad hoc ministerial committee meeting aims to propose how key executive positions within ECOWAS institutions will be distributed among member countries.
Positions to be filled include those of President, Vice-President and Commissioners of the ECOWAS Commission, as well as judges of the Community Court of Justice, the Auditor-General, and the Directors-General of the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) and the West African Health Organization (WAHO).
The rotation of ECOWAS statutory appointees is based on the organisation’s principle of equitable rotation among member states to ensure fair representation within its executive bodies.
This process is guided by the legal texts and regulations governing ECOWAS, with each appointee serving a single, non-renewable four-year term.
Proposals and recommendations emerging from the Abuja meeting will be presented to the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for approval at their next summit in December 2025.
The initiative reflects ECOWAS’s continued commitment to strengthening regional cooperation, transparency, and inclusivity in its governance structures.
