ECG’s missing containers—A story that doesn’t add up

After months of waiting to hear what steps the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Office of the Attorney General, were taking regarding the missing containers, Ghanaians are now being told that all of them have been traced.

According to ECG’s acting Managing Director, Ing. Julius Kpekpena, the company has successfully located the containers. Frankly, this latest revelation can only be described as a tale for the marines.

It will be recalled that the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, first revealed on the floor of Parliament that several containers belonging to ECG had gone missing.

His subsequent visit to the Port confirmed the development, with further reports indicating that some of the containers had been traced to private melting companies in Tema, where brand new cables were being destroyed.

Yet, in his recent briefing to the Energy Committee of Parliament, Ing. Kpekpena, claimed ECG had made “a lot of progress” since May, when many of the containers could not be found. “So far, we have moved over a thousand containers. I’m happy to say that we traced all of the containers and we started moving them from the port,” he said.

This shifting narrative from Parliament, to the Minister’s visit to the Port, and now the MD’s so-called progress report, sounds more like a cock-and-bull story than an account worthy of public trust.

As a newspaper, we are not suggesting official complicity, but clearly, someone is pulling a fast one on Ghanaians. How could containers that were said to be missing suddenly be discovered at the same port from which they allegedly vanished? Did these containers grow wings and fly back?

The truth is that ECG has long been a crime scene, where contracts are awarded without regard for procurement laws. It is baffling that such huge consignments were procured without a clear plan for clearing them at the Port. This entire affair reeks of negligence at best and possible corruption at worst. It must be thoroughly investigated, and anyone found culpable should face the full rigors of the law.

Meanwhile, ordinary Ghanaians continue to bear the brunt of ECG’s inefficiency and mismanagement.

Despite the much-criticized Dumsor Levy, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has approved yet another tariff increase, effective October 1, 2025.

The poor Ghanaian consumer cannot continue to be punished, because ECG has become a leaking pot.

Good governance demands accountability, not excuses and shifting stories. Ghanaians deserve better.
