Hot SourceFormer Minister of Education and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has pledged to make education the central pillar of his vision to eradicate poverty in Ghana if elected to lead the party and ultimately the country.
Speaking during an engagement with constituency executives in the Central Region over the weekend as part of his campaign tour, Dr Adutwum said Ghana must rethink its development approach by investing strategically in education to build a skilled workforce capable of thriving in the fourth industrial revolution.
Dr Adutwum, who served as Education Minister for four years, said education remains the most powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty and create opportunities for the youth.
“My vision is about the transformation of Ghana. In the process, I want to ensure that Ghana gets itself out of poverty. Our people are struggling. The elderly are struggling. The youth are caught up in a situation where unemployment is bedevilling them,” he said.
The former minister said the country must create “multiple pathways to prosperity”, ensuring that students from all backgrounds can access skills training, technology-driven opportunities and proper guidance to position themselves for the job market.
“One area where there are a lot of jobs is the IT sector. Even if you do sociology and you want to be a software developer, it should be possible for you to do so. We should also be able to provide counselling support for people to know where opportunities exist so they can pursue them,” he added.
Dr Adutwum referenced global examples, noting that countries like Singapore, China and India have used education reforms to accelerate development, insisting that Ghana can do the same with the right political will and leadership.
He challenged the nation to envision a long-term national agenda beyond partisan cycles.
“India has announced that by 2047, they will become a developed nation. My challenge to Ghana is that if you give me the opportunity, by 2057, Ghana will be a developed country. Other countries have done it — why not us?”
He emphasised that under his leadership, education will be reformed to serve as a transformative force across all sectors, including agriculture, industry and technology.
“We will transform education for education to transform Ghana. We will transform agric so that people can be wealthy through agric. Every sphere of activity in this country, we will look at age-old problems with a new set of eyes and change the course of history,” he stated.
Dr Adutwum is currently touring constituencies across the country as part of his campaign to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
