Cross-Party Alignment: Wike Has Lost PDP Membership, Says CP-PDP

The Conference of Professionals in the Peoples Democratic Party (CP-PDP), after its technical weekly review of the state of affairs of the party, posited that the former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike, has lost his membership of the PDP.

In a communique of the meeting signed by Obinna Nwachukwu, the national coordinator CP-PDP, said that: ‘’The position of the CP-PDP is predicated on the public declaration by the FCT Minister of his alignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to pursue APC’s victory in the 2026 FCT Council election and the 2027 presidential election, which declaration is in direct conflict with the PDP Code of Conduct of members as expressly provided under Section 10 (6) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).

According to the communique, ‘’For clarity, Section 10 (6) of the PDP Constitution clearly states that: “No member of the party shall align with other parties or groups to undermine the party or any of its elected government.

‘’The unambiguous intention of the crafters of the PDP Constitution in the reading, interpretation and application of Section 10 (6) is that a person who aligns with another political party, as has been done by the FCT minister, has by the effect of such alignment effectively relinquished his affiliation with the party and ceases to be a member of the PDP.

‘’It is pertinent to state that electoral contest is central and fundamental to the existence of a political party, including the PDP, for which members must devote absolute, undivided and unwavering loyalty, dedication and commitment under all circumstances.’’

Consequently, the communique said: ‘’By publicly declaring to work for APC’s electoral victory, Chief Nyesom Wike, has effectively declared for the APC, and to that effect, under the PDP Constitution, he can no longer be deemed to be accepted or parade himself to be a member of the PDP. His declaration of loyalty to the APC has effectively terminated his membership of the PDP.

‘’This is in addition to Wike’s unrelenting violation of the provisions of Section 58 of PDP Constitution by his constant public vituperations against the PDP, its officials and statutory organs.’’

The CP-PDP, therefore, demanded that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, without further delay, invokes the express provisions of 29(2) (b) and 59 (1) of the PDP Constitution and officially expel Chief Nyesom Wike summarily from the PDP.

‘’The NWC must note that continued indulgence of Wike even after his declaration of support and loyalty to the APC is cancerous to the PDP. Moreover, the NWC delay in expelling the FCT minister has become vexatious to loyal and well-meaning party members. The NWC must therefore protect the party by immediately expelling the FCT Minister from the PDP.” 

‘’As we await a prompt action by the NWC, the CP-PDP directs all professionals in the PDP to sever all partisan relationship, connection, and link with the FCT Minister in line with the demands of the Code of Conduct of members of the PDP,’’ the communique stated.

The CP-PDP restated its commitment to the unity, stability, and growth of our party and the protection of its integrity at all times.

    An early morning protest by the Take-It-Back Movement and other civil society organisations almost ruined the grand finale of the National Police Day celebration, which was held at the Eagle Square in Abuja.

    Operatives of the Nigerian Police Force, rather than participating in the maiden National Police Day celebration in Abuja, had a herculean task controlling protesters who took over a street in Maitama to protest what they described as the police’s systematic suppression of dissenting voices against the incumbent government, hiding under the Cybercrime Act.

    Several other police personnel were also deployed to enforce traffic diversion away from the Eagle Square, the venue of the National Police Day celebration. 

    The diversion led to a heavy traffic congestion on most roads leading to the city centre.

    Also, those deployed to control the protesters used tear gas to disperse the peaceful protesters in the Maitama area of Abuja. 

    The protesters, who had gathered peacefully to express their grievances, were thrown into disarray as the tear gas canisters sent many scurrying for safety. 

    The protest, which was planned nationwide spearheaded by the Take-It-Back Movement and other civil society organisations, began earlier in the day to draw attention to several national issues. 

    Key among the concerns raised by the organisers were the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act, the worsening economic hardship in the country, and the emergency rule in Rivers State.

    The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, such as “Stop the repression” and “Let us breathe”. 

    The publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, was also present at the protest ground to show solidarity with the movement.

    Meanwhile, a statement by the state Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, FCT Abuja, Rex Elanu, demanded the immediate release of the arrested members and called for a review of the Cybercrime Act to protect, not punish, online speech.

    According to him, “Today, April 7, 2025, members of the Take-It-Back Movement held a peaceful protest around the Transcorp Hilton junction near Unity Fountain in Abuja to mark the national day of resistance against digital censorship and the misuse of the Cybercrime Act to silence dissent.

    “During the protest, security operatives arrested two participants, the popular TIB flag bearer and our treasurer, Abosede Imanah. Police officers also seized personal belongings, including protest materials.”

    The protest, he said, aimed to highlight the growing concerns over the crackdown on free speech online, where citizens, especially young activists, face harassment and arrest for their digital expressions.

    Earlier, in a separate statement, the National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, said the protest was aimed at resisting the increasing authoritarianism of the current administration and demanding urgent relief for Nigerians battling inflation and insecurity.

    President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s resolve to ensure a Nigeria Police Force that is well-trained, well-motivated and well-equipped with modern tools and technology to effectively combat crime in Nigeria.

    This, he said, had become necessary to ensure the nation’s security forces are constantly “steps ahead of those who threaten the peace, welfare and prosperity” of the nation.

    Speaking on Monday during the maiden edition of the National Police Day celebrations, which climaxed a week-long activities to mark the 2025 Police Week at the Eagle Square in Abuja, the president formally announced the institutionalisation of April 7 every year as National Police Day to honour fallen heroes of the force and also acknowledge the heroics of its personnel.

    President Tinubu, who was represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, declared: “As president, I reaffirm this administration’s steadfast dedication to the welfare and empowerment of the Nigeria Police Force. A secure Nigeria is vital for our collective prosperity, and this vision begins with ensuring that our police force is well-equipped, well-trained and well-motivated. 

    “We are resolute in our commitment to police welfare and comprehensive reform. To that end, let me assure you that the Federal Government of Nigeria will institutionalise 7th April as an annual celebration of National Police Day, cementing its place in our national calendar and demonstrating our enduring appreciation for the Nigeria Police Force.”

    The president outlined decisive measures his administration is currently putting in place to immediately engender an effective and formidable police force, including provision of modern tools and technology to enhance the operations of the force, as well as adequate accommodations, accessible healthcare and quality education for families of police personnel.

    “In this light, we are taking decisive steps to improve the conditions under which our police officers serve. Adequate housing, accessible healthcare, and quality education for your children are priorities we are committed to fulfilling. 

    “These promises will begin to materialise immediately. We are also determined to equip you with modern tools and technology to enhance your effectiveness in combating crime. Furthermore, we will ensure that your salaries and benefits reflect the gravity of your responsibilities and the risks you face daily. Anything less would be unacceptable,” he stated.

    President Tinubu assured Nigerians that his government “will leave no stone unturned in ensuring effective policing, the safety of lives and property, and the resolution of internal security challenges such as banditry, insurgency and kidnapping”, maintaining that the administration remains resolute in its mission to restore peace and security across all regions of the country.

    Emphasizing the role of the Nigeria Police Force, he described the force as a cornerstone of the nation’s security, the first line of defence against crime, even as he maintained that the police are protectors of the nation’s democracy and the custodians of citizens’ safety. 

    “Your role is indispensable, and your contributions are immeasurable. Why have we established National Police Day? The answer is straightforward. This day serves to highlight your invaluable service and to honour the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. 

    “To their families, we extend our deepest condolences and our unwavering commitment to preserving their legacy. Let it be clear: 7th April is not merely a date on the calendar. It is a symbol of our enduring partnership and respect for the Nigeria Police Force—a day firmly entrenched in our national consciousness,” President Tinubu added.

    He commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and his team for what he described as “their remarkable work in advancing reforms aligned with” his administration’s goals, noting that the dedication and commitment of the leadership of the force “are paving the way for a police force that all Nigerians can take pride in”.

    Earlier, IGP Egbetokun said beyond commemoration of the day of the establishment of the Nigeria Police Force, the National Police Day offers opportunity to remember fallen heroes and also acknowledge the heroics of men and women of the police in theatres of operation across the country and beyond. 

    According to him, the day also provides a platform to emphasize the renewed call for excellence, professionalism and respect for human rights, among other virtues that the new police force embodies. 

    He highlighted the reform agenda of the police force under his leadership, noting that the reforms are hinged on building a force that commands trust and professionalism, enforces justice and promotes national development through enhanced security and policing of the country.

    Highpoints of the event were the inspection of the guard by the vice-president, procession by tactical units and other security organisations, and the silent drill display by officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
