COP Lydia Donkor joins Interpol Africa Committee

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Commissioner of Police (COP) Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), has been elected to the newly formed Interpol Africa Committee. The announcement was made in a statement on Sunday, 31 August 2025.

COP Donkor will serve a four-year term, representing Ghana as the sole female member of the committee. Her election is seen as a milestone for gender inclusion in law enforcement leadership across Africa and a recognition of Ghana’s standing in international policing.

According to the Ghana Police Service, “her presence on the committee underscores the growing importance of gender inclusion in high-level security and law enforcement decision-making structures.”

The Interpol Africa Committee is tasked with strengthening police cooperation across the continent. It will identify crime-fighting priorities, advise the African Regional Conference, and recommend policing strategies to address regional security challenges.

Alongside Ghana, Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa have secured four-year terms on the committee, while Botswana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Sudan will serve for two years.

The Police Service described COP Donkor’s election as both a personal achievement and an opportunity for Africa to benefit from her experience in shaping policing strategies over the next four years.
