Commercial Transport Operators dismiss fare hike proposal

A coalition of Commercial Transport Operators has issued a strong call to the public to disregard the proposed increment in transport fares reportedly scheduled to take effect on August 8, 2025.

In a press release addressed to all stakeholders, the operators firmly stated that there has been no official communication from the relevant regulatory bodies, including the Ministry of Transport or the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), to validate the announcement made by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).

“We urge Ghanaians to disregard the proposed transport fare increment slated for August 8, 2025,” the statement read.

“There has been no official announcement from relevant authorities, and we are yet to agree on any fare increase.”

The operators emphasized that any decision regarding fare adjustments must be the product of consensus among all key transport unions, in consultation with government regulators. As such, they consider the GRTCC’s announcement premature and unauthorised.

Transport users have been advised to continue paying the current fares until further notice. The operators also called on commuters to remain vigilant and to report any drivers or conductors who attempt to charge new, unofficial rates.

“Report any unauthorized fare increases to the authorities,” the release urged, stressing the importance of protecting passengers from exploitative practices.

The transport operators reiterated their commitment to engaging constructively with all stakeholders to reach a consensus on any future adjustments that reflect prevailing economic conditions, such as fuel prices, spare parts, and inflation.

The warning comes amid growing public anxiety over the cost of transportation, especially as economic pressures continue to mount on both commuters and drivers.
