Hot SourceCommercial transport operators have thrown down the gauntlet, warning the government it has just one week to fix the Pokuase–Nsawam road or face a crippling transport shutdown.
In a joint statement, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and allied driver groups accused the Ministry of Roads and Highways of failing to honour its own repair promises.
“The road’s condition has led to skyrocketing operational expenses, including constant repairs and replacement of spare parts. Our vehicles are suffering premature damage, and the economic impact on our livelihoods is unbearable,” the statement read.
The Pokuase–Nsawam road, a key link between Accra and the Eastern, Ashanti, and Northern regions, has deteriorated so badly that drivers say it has become a death trap. Frequent accidents, long travel delays, and high repair bills are now the norm.
“We were given a timeline, but nothing has been done. The government’s inaction is unacceptable, and we can no longer tolerate the suffering of our members and the general public,” said Emmanuel Nii Ankrah, National Vice and Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the GPRTU.
With frustration boiling over, the operators are threatening drastic action. “If no action is taken within seven days, we will have no choice but to withdraw our services and take to the streets until our demands are met,” declared Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, National PRO of GPRTU.
“This is not just our fight—it’s a civic duty. Everyone who uses this road or knows someone affected should stand with us to demand accountability from the authorities,” said Paa Willie, National Chairman of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.
