Hot SourceThe Ministry of Education, has dismissed reports suggesting that government intends to cancel teacher trainee allowances, describing the claims as false and misleading.
Hashmin Mohammed, Media Relations Officer for the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, clarified that no such announcement has been made by the Minister.
“These reports are completely untrue. The Honourable Minister never said the government would stop paying teacher trainee allowances. What is circulating is deep fake misinformation and should be disregarded,” Mr. Mohammed stated.
He explained that the Minister’s remarks, delivered during the inauguration of governing councils for ten Colleges of Education at the GTEC Conference Hall on Friday, August 22, 2025, focused on reforms to grant autonomy to the institutions.
As part of these reforms, a bill is currently before Parliament to elevate Colleges of Education to full university status. Additionally, government will absorb the fees of all first-year students under its new ‘No Fees Stress’ policy.
Mr. Mohammed added that student feeding arrangements would also be reviewed as part of the transition, stressing that the reforms are aimed at strengthening teacher education, not removing existing support.
“These reforms are designed to enhance the training of teachers and provide better opportunities for students. They are not in any way intended to cancel allowances,” he emphasized.
