Education Key to Empowering Society, Says PENGASAN

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has said that one of the best ways to promote national growth and development is through provision of quality education for children and youths.

It said that giving our children opportunity to learn in a conducive environment with good facilities will go a long way to help them realize their aspiration of becoming future leaders in the country.

Speaking during the commissioning of the LEA Primary School, Tukuruwa in Kwali Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Abuja on Tuesday,
PENGASAN president, Comrade Festus Osifo said that the gesture will inspire the children to achieve greater heights in life.

For over two years, the two buildings housing the LEA Primary School, Tukuruwa in Kwali Area Council was in dilapidated state with it’s roof completely blown off by rain, forcing the School children to sit on bare floor to carry on learning activities.

However, PENGASAN Foundation, the charity arm.of the oil workers union floated about a year ago intervened and rehabilitated the entire structures at the school including the toilet facilities.

The project, which includes two blocks of six classrooms, staff rooms, toilets, borehole, 200 desks, and 800 notebooks and school bags for pupils, was executed in less than a month.

Addressing parents, children and community leaders who gathered at the school to witness the ceremony, Osifo said that the PENGASSAN desirous of helping Indegent citizens in anyway possible.

Osifo said: “We felt that as a body PENGASAN, this was one of the projects that we think was quite auspicious, one of the projects that would go straight to the heart of this community and also better the lives of these children, because these are future senators, these are future presidents, these are future governors, and these are future local government chairmen and chair ladies.

“So for us, we are extremely excited to have undertook this project. There is nothing more exciting than this, because if these children go into the classroom, they see a befitting chair to sit on. Almost about 200 of them were supplied and about 800 exercise books that we have also supplied, as well as school bags, just our little way of saying, thank you to a country that has given us, support to be whom we are today.

Osifo spoke of other interventions made by the Foundation, Osifo said: “We’ve done a lot of intervention across the nook and cranny of the country, where in different general hospitals to look out for the poorest of the poor in our society, people who could not afford a simple medical bills to offset their bills, millions of Naira was expanded and expanded on that.

“You could see the joy that came out from these people, because a lot of them the hospital could not release them to go home, even when they were not well.

While haring his experiences in the execution of various humanitarian interventions, the Chairman of PENGASAN Foundation, David Owan said that he was deeply touched by the circumstances that some people found themselves in.

In the case of the LEA Primary School, Tukuruwa he said that the Foundation was enthused by the excitement and level of cooperation by the community during the rehabilitation..

His Royal Highness, Etsu Kwali, Luka Ayedoo Nizassan III, expressed deep appreciation on behalf of the community, describing the project as a symbol of hope and inclusion.

“We feel hopeful, because this project will provide conveniences or has provided conveniences for the pupils of this school to learn. Our hearts are so filled with joy,” he said.

The traditional ruler praised the swift response of PENGASSAN to the community’s request for help.

Chairman of Kwali Area Council, Hon. Danladi Chiya, who received the symbolic handover of the renovated school, acknowledged PENGASSAN’s critical role in reviving a long-neglected facility.

“Today, I’m overwhelmed standing before you. I’m so glad that the PENGASSAN Foundation have deemed it necessary to touch the life of Kwali people.

“Indeed, the entire community of Kwali Area Council were honoured and were happy for your intervention.” Chiya said.

Stakeholders in the tourism sub-sector came together to call for deliberate and strategic investment in infrastructure development.
They said tourist infrastructure will help to revitalize the nation’s tourism industry.

While sharing experiences, some gave direction pointing out that an access road leading to any tourism site is key.
Coordinator, WelcomeToNigeria Expo, Isa Yusuf Sago in a compelling address said the Expo calls for more strategic repositioning.

“We recognise that infrastructure is the backbone of any thriving economy. But infrastructure alone is not enough. We must build strong institutional linkages, nurture inclusive growth, and drive a bold agenda for sustainable development that touches every sector and every citizen,” he said.

First-of-its-kind, WelcomeToNigeria Expo was held in Abuja recently, in a move to ensure that tourism not only thrives but also able to contribute to the nation’s economy.

The Expo brought together state and non-state actors, public and private development experts, investors, civil society organisations, academia, and international stakeholders to discuss, strategise, and forge sustainable partnerships that will unlock Nigeria’s vast developmental potential.

It also attracted top stakeholders across government and regulatory agencies.

The 2-day Expo offered a unique opportunity to align tourism development with national planning priorities by forging sustainable partnerships for infrastructure development, enhancing institutional linkages, and promoting coherent strategies for growth and sustainable development.

Minister of Art Culture Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hanatu Musa Musawa restated government’s commitment to tourism, urging tourism industry operators to reposition tourism as a viable and competitive contributor to national development.

In her keynote address, she said the chosen theme “National Agenda for Tourism Partnership on Infrastructure Development, Institutional Linkages, Growth and Sustainable Development” is not only timely but also central to the Federal Government’s broader objectives of economic diversification, inclusive growth, and sustainable national development. She said “
Nigeria is not just a destination but an experience rich in culture, vibrant in creativity, welcoming in spirit, and limitless in potential.
“Today, tourism is no longer a peripheral sector it is an engine of economic vitality. It generates jobs, fosters cultural exchange, supports environmental stewardship, and strengthens national identity.”

In the same vein, the tourism stakeholders celebrated domestic tourism. They said that segment of tourism is witnessing rapid growth in leaps and bounds.

But they are quick to add that it’s not yet Uhuru.

They said like other sectors undergoing bold transformative reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the tourism sector is supposed to be
receiving its full dose of strategic attention.

Already, some said they have seen the ripple effects of community-based tourism initiatives launched as cultural festivals like Ojude Oba and Calabar Carnival once seen as local celebrations, now anchor local economies, contributing as much as 60 per cent of annual revenue in their peak seasons.

Others talked about the revamped tourist products like Ikogosi resort which has improved tourism to Ekiti State lately.

Diaspora Nigerians who came home last year may have contributed to Nigeria tourism GDP.

At present, domestic tourism is said to contribute around 3.65% to GDP equating to $17.3 billion and supports over 1.9 million jobs.

The Expo therefore canvassed for a comprehensive national infrastructure development framework which they said is urgently required to systematize investment, improve regional access, and align public-private efforts toward sustainable growth.

In a Paper titled “National Framework for Nigeria’s Domestic Tourism Infrastructure Development,” one tourism operator highlighted the impressive domestic tourism performance but he pointed out that the sector could have contributed more it wasn’t hindered by lack of access to the tourism sites.

“Most tourist attractions outside urban centres lack quality roads. You can’t look too far to see Awhum Cave, Mambilla Plateau, Ogbunik Caves,” he noted.
Apart from infrastructure deficits, he said safety concerns and fragmented marketing strategies continue to hinder tourism full potential
Regardless, he said
Nigeria’s domestic tourism sector is growing rapidly, driven by youth tourism demand, increased travel, and a renewed interest in local destinations.
He highlighted the growth trends and economic impact in 2023. Quoting news reports he said
“Nigerians undertook approximately 3 million domestic trips making a 20 per cent increase from 2022.
In 2024, he stated that spending on domestic tourism reached nearly ₦4.95 trillion ($7.7 billion).

Musawa urged tourism stakeholders to continue to unlock the potential.

“The success of our national tourism agenda hinges on partnerships. Government alone cannot do it. We need private investors, destination managers, financiers, local governments, artisans, entrepreneurs, and civil society to join hands in this journey. I use this opportunity to call on the organised private sector to deepen their investment commitments, leverage innovation, and build destination brands that can compete globally,” the minister said.

She hinted that WelcomeToNigeria Expo 2025 is a sweet nod to public-private involvement.
She said the strategic forum brings together public and private actors to catalyze in a conversations and commitments towards transforming the Nigerian tourism sector.

The PermanentSecretary, Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad also praised the maiden edition of WelcomeToNigeria Expo’25 describing it as a “call to action.”

Mohammad urged all stakeholders at the event to “embrace the conversations, explore the partnerships, and commit to the actions that will shape the future of tourism in Nigeria. Let us harness our collective energies and talents to deliver on a shared national agenda.”

He added that
“My Ministry is fully committed to supporting platforms like WelcomeToNigeria Expo, not just as a convening space, but as a tool for evidence-based policy influence. The insights, innovations, and collaborations that emerge from this Expo will help inform a more robust national framework for domestic tourism infrastructure development, support the operationalization of tourism economic zones, and promote the art, culture and the creative industries as engines of inclusive growth.”

Sago in his speech made a 7-point recommendation among which is, each state should be encouraged to present flagship projects, investment opportunities, and development plans to attract partners and foster competition through innovation.

He wants WelcomeToNigeria Expo Development Secretariat to be created to track outcomes of each edition, coordinate stakeholders’ commitments, and ensure follow-through on resolutions reached at the Expo.

To strengthen the role of the organised private sector (OPS) and corporate entities, he said
“We must deepen Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) with a renewed framework that incentivizes corporate entities to invest in national development priorities, especially in areas like power, transport, smart agriculture, and vocational education.
“The future we want for Nigeria, one of shared prosperity, efficient institutions, and sustainable infrastructure, is within reach. But it will require deliberate, inclusive, and coordinated action.”

The minister agreed. She also stressed that tourism cannot thrive in isolation.
“It depends on robust infrastructure airports, roads, rail networks, hospitality facilities, communication systems, and destination amenities.

As the meeting closed, optimism was tempered with realism.

Among other things the minister said the Ministry of Art Culture Tourism and Creative Economy is strengthening institutional frameworks and aligning with national and sub-national actors to remove bottlenecks, improve ease of doing business, and harmonize tourism-related policies.

“We are also working with the National Planning Commission and the Federal Executive Council to ensure that tourism features more prominently in national development plans.
We are committed to supporting tourism MSMEs, investing in human capital development, and embracing digital transformation.
New areas such as eco-tourism, cultural festivals, creative experiences, and diaspora tourism present major growth frontiers.
“Through the National Tourism Masterplan and the soon-to-be-launched Tourism Satellite Account, we will generate reliable data, attract more investment, in and measure sector performance more effectively,” she also stated.

The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Soludo,  yesterday  expressed regret over the brutal assault of a youth corps member, Miss Jennifer Elohor, by members of the state security outfit, otherwise known as Agunechemba.

The governor, who condemned the treatment meted out to the corps member, however, assured the public  that the law must take its course.

He gave the assurance while speaking on Arise News Prime Time programme..

A viral video of the battery, including the striping of the lady by the vigilance group, had few days ago surfaced on the social media, with many condemning the act and calling for justice.

Reacting to the issue, Governor Soludo, who disclosed that the incident actually happened on July 23, but was brought to the media a month after, described the incident as very unfortunate.

The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor observed that irrespective of the alleged offence the lady may have committed, she is not deserving of the dehumanising treatment handed her by the some operatives of the Agunechemba.

“Nobody deserves to be treated that way” Soludo said, “even if they are criminals”, adding that, “the law must take its course irrespective of who is involved”.

He disclosed that the government had earlier arrested the eight operatives involved in the act but, did not proceed with prosecution because victim’s family was initially reluctant to take action.

He, however, urged Nigerians not to use the singular incident to judge the security outfit, giving them the credit for the peace and security in the state, adding that the operatives undergo regular training on best practices.

“Once in a while when things like this happen it is unfortunate… they have been working to keep Anambra safe, the people can testify of their contributions. However, when there are excesses, actions are taken and that is what happens all over the world.

Agunechemba Security Group  said it had  handed over eight of its operatives involved in the beating and stripping of a female corps member  to the police for investigation.

The Commander of the security group, Mr. Ken Emeakayi, who paraded the men involved in the incident, said they would be handed over to the police for investigation.

On whether the men will be dismissed, Emeakayi said: “They are still under investigation, and police are not taking it lightly at all.”

Meanwhile, a candidate of the state Labour Party (LP)in the forthcoming state governorship election, Dr. George Moghalu, has called for the disbandment of the security group.

 Moghalu, who addressed journalists in his campaign office about the trending video, called for the disbandment of the security group. He said incidences of brutalisation by the group have become much, and that the federal government needs to wade in immediately.

He said: “The federal government should comment on this, moreover, because she is on a national assignment and should be protected. The federal government should also intervene in the security situation in Anambra State.

“I was saddened by what I saw in that video because it is scandalous, not just to Anambra or the state government but to every responsible person. It is unacceptable, no matter what the lady may have done, it would have been better to arrest her in the normal way and hand her over to the police, and not brutalize, tearing her up and bringing down her dignity.

“I stand on my authority to ask that Udogachi be disbanded and trained. I have said it many times that these people are not trained, they should be disbanded, and trained. Get them trained and indoctrinated to suit what we need in this state.

“This is one too many cases. They have killed, threatened, and extorted money from many, and it is unacceptable to me.”

The LP candidate added, “Where is the lady involved? The government should bring her to the public domain to tell her story. This is a civilized community. That she is a youth corps member makes the case worse because she was only serving her nation.”

Meanwhile, talking politics, Soludo maintained his earlier position that anyone telling Nigerians he can deliver the dividends of democracy in just one term is not being sincere.

He argued that even countries like China, Singapore, Malaysia and other developed economies usually referenced by Nigerian politicians took longer than one term for their policies to be fully implemented and yield desired results.

“I have been there, I have seen how time flies” he said, “we have memories and we know that when people are talking like this they are either taking us to be fools or are not sincere. “

Soludo commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for a fair, transparent and peaceful conduct of last Saturday’s by-elections in the state, noting that the huge victory recorded by the All Progressives Grand Alliance, is a confirmation that Anambra State is APGA.

While he claimed that he is not taking any opposition for granted in the forthcoming governorship election slated for November this year, the governor, said his priority presently is to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

“We are going to fight for every vote when the time comes, but for now we are concerned with execution, supervision, and commissioning of projects”, he said, adding that he is determined to transform Anambra State and make it more better before leaving office.

He claimed to have succeeded so far because of his prudent management of state resources, adding that Anambra is one state that has not gone about borrowing to fund projects.

“Nothing is wrong with borrowing but I am not going to borrow for consumption or for some mundane things”, Soludo said, just as he went ahead to list several road projects and other infrastructural projects is administration is currently embarking on.

He said: “I am very intentional on urban regeneration. “

Adamawa Rescues 14 Children from Human Trafficking Ring, Hands over to Parents

The Adamawa State Government has successfully rescued 14 children who were victims of a human trafficking ring and reunited them with their parents.

The children, between the ages of 4 and 9, were trafficked from various communities in Adamawa State to the Southeastern region of Nigeria.

The state Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa George Farauta, in her speech at the handover ceremony in Yola, said the trafficker, a middle-aged woman of Igbo extraction identified as Ngozi Abdulwahab, perfected the art of trafficking minors from Adamawa State to the Southeastern region, where she sold the victims for paltry sums of ₦800,000 to ₦1.7 million per child.

The deputy governor revealed that the government received an intelligence report about missing children in July 2025 and swung into action with the cooperation of security operatives. 

A combined manhunt was launched, and the trafficker was arrested.

She further stated that the government has commended the security agencies, including the Police, DSS, and NSCDC, for their role in rescuing the children. The Ministry of Women Affairs and the media were also praised for their professional reportage.

She further explained that the rescued children have been rehabilitated and prepared to be reunited with their parents. The government has provided each family with ₦100,000 and food and non-food items to cushion any negative effect of the reunion.

According to her, the Ministry of Women Affairs and the Welfare Departments of respective local government areas will institute routine follow-ups to monitor the children’s upkeep and reintegration with their families.

The deputy governor emphasized that child trafficking is a crime that must not go unpunished and that the government will prosecute the perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law. She called on parents to take parenting more seriously and treat children with the deserved responsibility.

She said: “The government has assured the public that it will continue to work tirelessly to prevent child trafficking and protect the rights of children in the state. The general public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.

“The Adamawa State Government has promised to continue working with security agencies to dismantle human trafficking networks and protect the rights of children in the state. The rescued children are expected to be reunited with their parents today.”

Northern CAN Urges Christians to Participate in Voter Registration

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has called on its members 

to participate actively in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise that commenced recently.

(INEC).

In a statement yesterday, Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Yakubu Pam, urged  Christians to use  the opportunity ahead of the 2027 general election.

“As responsible citizens and followers of Christ, we have a moral and civic duty to contribute meaningfully to the future of our nation,” he said.

“One of the most effective ways to do this is through active participation in the democratic process, beginning with voter registration.”

The association emphasised the importance of voter registration as the first step towards securing a Permanent Voter Card (PVC), which it described as “the gateway to participating in elections and having a say in who leads our country at all levels,” he added.

The association urged every Christian of voting age, especially those who have not previously registered or who have relocated since the last elections, to turn out en masse and update their records with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Pam noted that “Democracy thrives when the voices of the people are heard. As a community of faith, we must not sit on the sidelines.”

He said: “It is imperative that Christians rise to the occasion and engage fully in the electoral process. 

“By registering, voting, and encouraging others to do the same, we can help ensure that leaders who reflect our values of integrity, justice, equity, and godliness are elected into positions of authority,” he said.

According to Pam,  good governance does not happen by chance and called on churches, Christian organisations, and community leaders to mobilise their members.

“Our silence or indifference only empowers the wrong forces to take control of the destiny of our people and our nation.

“We call on churches, Christian organisations, and community leaders across the North and beyond to mobilise their members and ensure that no eligible Christian is left behind in this critical exercise.

“Let us work together to educate, encourage, and empower our members to register, collect their PVCs, and prepare to vote when the time comes. God bless Nigeria,” he said.

Rainstorm Destroys  Houses, Council Secretariat in Jos

A  rainstorm   yesterday  hit Jos, Plateau State capital destroying South Local Government secretariat and  some houses  in the Bukuru area of the city.

Chairman of Jos South LGA, Mr. Silas Patrick Dung, confirmed the development to newsmen, saying the storm was extremely strong, uprooting the entire four columns holding the Secretariat gate house and destroying some houses in the community.

“For the storm to destroy the Council Secretariat gate built with 25 mm rod tells you that it must be a very strong rainstorm,” he said.

The chairman, who visited the affected areas with officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), reported that about six houses were destroyed, with several others having their roofs blown off and fences damaged.

“From what we can ascertain at the moment, we have counted about six houses that were destroyed. 

We are still going round the community and waiting to hear from other locations if the extent of damage is more than what we are able to assess now,” Dung explained.

The chairman blamed the damage on the strong winds, describing it as a natural disaster. 

“It’s actually a storm that caused the havoc. So, it is a natural disaster and not man-made because there is nothing anyone could have done to stop it. The local government is working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide support to affected residents,” he added.

He assured the people that the council would take necessary steps to prevent further risks and damage to the vandalised structures.

 “We are trying to pull down the structure so as to prevent further risk the destroyed structure could pose in the people,” Dung stated.
