Tinubu Pushes for Local Arms, Ammunition Production to Enhance Insurgency Fight

President Bola Tinubu yesterday vowed to scale up local production of arms and ammunition as part of his renewed push to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture. He said boosting homegrown defence capacity will not only reduce dependence on foreign suppliers but also sharpen the nation’s fight against insecurity.
Speaking in Abuja during the graduation ceremony of Course 33 of the National Defence College, the President, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the College as a vivid representation of his administration’s commitment to building human capital in areas critical to our national survival.
Tinubu stressed that strengthening indigenous manufacturing of military hardware was crucial in enhancing Nigeria’s security and development.
He applauded the culture of excellence in research at the National Defence College (NDC), citing the Presidential Treaties on Harnessing Indigenous Manufacturing for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2040, as an affirmation of the strength of such a tradition in the country.
“I must also commend the tradition of research excellence in this College. Your Presidential Treaties on Harnessing Indigenous Manufacturing for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2040 is a clear demonstration of this strength.
“I have directed that relevant stakeholders study your recommendations and harvest the strategies you proposed, because strengthening indigenous manufacturing is indispensable to our nation’s security and development,” the President stated.
He expressed delight at the theme for the College’s Course 33, “Strengthening Institutions for National Security and Development in Nigeria,” pointing out that the foundation of every successful society was strong and resilient institutions.
Noting that his administration has since made strong institutions a national priority, Tinubu said, “They uphold the rule of law, safeguard citizens’ rights, promote accountability, and deliver essential services. In national security, they are the framework for managing conflict, countering threats, and building resilience against instability.
“In development, they ensure sound governance, effective planning, and the delivery of policies that serve the common good. This is why this administration has made institutional strengthening a national priority, and I trust that the knowledge you have acquired here will be deployed to fortify the institutions of Nigeria and of your respective nations.”
The President expressed firm belief that “without strong institutions there can be no lasting democracy,” stating that in pursuit of this conviction, his administration has taken bold steps to reposition the nation’s “economy for growth and shared prosperity.
“Today, there is renewed confidence in our economy, reflected in the nation’s rising business outlook. Today, even the stock market has grown by over forty-eight percent year on year, the best performance in almost three decades.
“While this reflects investor faith in our reforms, I acknowledge that we must continue to tackle inflation and food insecurity to ensure that this growth translates into real prosperity for every Nigerian,” he declared.
Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s resolve to complete construction at the permanent site of the National Defence College in Piwoyi, saying that while it is a matter close to the heart of the College, he had been briefed on the state of infrastructure at the site.
According to him: “While progress has been made, much remains to be done. I assure you that this administration is committed to completing the permanent site, to ensure that the College continues to deliver strategic training not only for Nigeria but also for allied nations. When fully equipped, this College can, and should, evolve into a Defence Postgraduate University.
“I have therefore directed the Commandant to work closely with the Minister of Defence to develop a clear strategy to upgrade the facilities, while government explores further interventions to enhance the infrastructure,” he assured.
The President implored the Course 33 graduands to join hands in delivering his administration’s renewed hope to Nigerians, just as he recalled that his pledge to the people is “to provide effective and creative leadership, and I call on you to be partners in the task of birthing the new Nigeria we all dream of.
“Graduates of Course 33, you step out today into a world more volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous than when you began your course last year. Global economic headwinds, the war in Ukraine, the disruptive force of emerging technologies, the threats in cyberspace, and the unsettling resurgence of unconstitutional changes of government in our region form the backdrop of your service.
“But you have been prepared for this moment. You have been trained to think and act strategically. You have been equipped to lead with vision and courage,” he also stated.
 Tinubu further commended the Commandant, the management team, and the Faculty of the College for grooming the Course 33 graduands for the “Armed Forces, for Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and for the friendly nations represented,” in the Course.
Earlier, the Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral J.O. Okosu, welcomed the President to the ceremony, highlighting his administration’s solid support for the military institution.
He expressed confidence in the graduands’ abilities to deliver, stressing that the training programme is aimed, among other things, at tackling several pertinent security challenges, including banditry and oil theft in the Niger Delta region.
On his part, the Deputy Commandant of NDC, Major General Kevin Ukandu, explained that knowledge and skills were imparted to the participants in several areas, including defense management, strategy formulation, command, and geopolitics.

According to him, the training was designed to prepare them to undertake high-level policy, command, and staff functions in single and joint service headquarters, as well as civil appointments at national and international levels.

The Course 33 graduates are drawn from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police Force, and other institutions both within and outside Nigeria

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and some upstream gas suppliers yesterday signed long-term Gas Supply Agreements (GSAs) with the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) for the delivery of 1.29 billion standard cubic feet per day (bscf/d) of feed gas.
This emerged as the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, said President Bola Tinubu remains committed to ensuring that oil companies that once exited the country are compelled to return, given the recent incentives provided in the sector by the government.
The 20-year agreements, with extension options between the NNPC and GSAs, were signed in Abuja, by the NLNG and Amni International Petroleum Development Company Limited; Sunlink Energies and Resources Limited; First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited; SNEPCo; NNPC Gas Marketing Limited; NNPC E&P Limited; Shell Nigeria Gas Solutions Limited; Oando Group; and Aradel Holdings.
The agreements, a statement from the NNPC said, aims at bridging the prolonged shortfall in upstream gas availability, and marks a major boost for Nigeria’s energy transition agenda and the federal government’s gas reforms aimed at strengthening the nation’s economic prosperity and energy security.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC,  Bayo Ojulari, commended NLNG’s shareholders and the government for their long-term commitment to value delivery despite the challenges faced over the years. 
He described the agreements as a giant step towards value creation and sustainable gas supply.
“These GSAs have opened up opportunities for the growth of our industry both for local and international development. They’re hinged on collaboration, synergies and opportunities. We need to leverage economies of scale, share risk and opportunities for us to attain Mr. President’s Decade of Gas vision,” he said.
Ojulari lauded the enabling environment and private sector support fostered by Tinubu.
“It is important to commend the President’s tremendous effort that has enabled the business through the issuance of Executive Orders targeted at gas developments and ease of doing business,” he added.
The GCEO reaffirmed NNPC’s readiness to accelerate the realisation of the Presidential Executive Orders for the industry, pledging to work with partners to unlock opportunities for collective prosperity, in line with the national gas development targets for incremental production.
In his remarks, NLNG Managing Director, Philip Mshelbila, who hailed the GSAs as a game-changer for Nigeria’s gas industry, said they will enhance local gas production capacity, improve supply reliability, and advance the nation’s energy security, industrialisation aspirations, and economic growth.
“We could not have achieved this sooner without the deliberate and concerted efforts of our shareholders and stakeholders in the energy industry in Nigeria. These agreements are a turning point in NLNG’s journey, restoring reliability of supply and ensuring we remain firmly on the path of growth and expansion,” Mshelbila noted.

According to him, the new GSAs reinforce Nigeria’s role in the global energy market while strengthening feed gas supply to the Bonny Island plant and supporting the company’s expansion drive.

The Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) is an incorporated joint venture (IJV), with NNPC Ltd holding 49 per cent, Shell Gas 25.6 per cent, TotalEnergies 15 per cent, and Eni International 10.4 per cent.

The third-party gas suppliers, a separate statement from NLNG said, is a strategic move to strengthen feedgas supply to its existing trains on Bonny Island and support the company’s expansion drive.

It said the new GSAs represent a significant boost to feedgas availability, enhancing NLNG’s capacity to meet its commercial commitments while laying the groundwork for expansion. 

“This development is aligned with the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative, which places natural gas at the centre of Nigeria’s industrialisation and energy transition agenda,” it added.

Meanwhile, Lokpobiri, has said Tinubu is ensuring that oil companies which once exited the country are compelled to return, given recent incentives provided in the sector by the government.

To this end, the minister noted that Nigeria is strengthening its position as a top global investment destination, welcoming international partners back to its oil and gas industry with competitive incentives and a renewed commitment to collaboration.

A statement in Abuja yesterday by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor, said Lokpobiri made the remarks while receiving a delegation from Vaalco Energy, an American independent oil and gas exploration and development company.

In recent years, Nigeria has introduced a range of incentives in the oil sector aimed at attracting investment, boosting production, and stabilising revenues. Central to this is the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) of 2021, which overhauled the fiscal and regulatory framework. 

The law provides for more competitive royalty and tax regimes, especially for deep offshore and frontier acreages, where exploration costs are high as well as ensure that investors are offered production allowances, reduced hydrocarbon tax rates, and flexible royalty structures tied to price and terrain.

Beyond fiscal reforms, the government has also promoted gas development through incentives such as tax holidays, zero customs duties on equipment, and capital allowances for companies investing in domestic gas supply and infrastructure. 

According to the statement, the American firm has also already expressed interest in re-entering Nigeria through the acquisition of Svenska’s PSC interest in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 145.

“The Government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is particularly interested in creating a better environment for companies that were once here but left for various reasons to return. We are prepared to offer incentives comparable to the best available globally.

“It is gratifying for us as a nation when those who have worked here become ambassadors, speaking of how friendly and conducive Nigeria is for business. We are glad to welcome you back,” Lokpobiri, who commended Vaalco’s renewed interest in Nigeria, was quoted as saying.

Lokpobiri assured that Nigeria’s oil sector policies now provide clarity, fiscal stability, and investor-friendly frameworks that encourage long-term partnerships.

 “Your renewed presence will help us ramp up production and achieve our national energy objectives. Together, we can build a future of shared growth and prosperity,” he stressed.

In his remarks, Vaalco Energy’s Managing Director, Pieter Van der Groen, said the company still sees Nigeria as a key investment hub, explaining that as a listed company in the US, the firm already has access to funding.

“We are here to seek regulatory guidance for acquiring Svenska’s interest in OML 145, but more importantly, to return to Nigeria and invest in a stronger way. As a New York Stock Exchange-listed company, we have access to funding to develop the assets we acquire. We are not here to sit on them; we are here to produce,” the MD stated

Despite visible cracks and growing disharmony within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party’s leaders are intensifying efforts to restore calm and strengthen cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Concerned about the implications of prolonged internal strife, PDP Governors, key stakeholders, and national executives are rallying to ensure that differences do not derail the party’s relevance as Nigeria’s main opposition force.
The renewed push for reconciliation is coming at a time when the PDP is under pressure to present a united front against the ruling party. Leaders say the latest round of consultations will focus on bridging factional divides, harmonising interests, and designing a clear strategy to reposition the party, rebuild public confidence, and boost its chances of reclaiming power in 2027.
To this end, PDP Governors and key stakeholders are converging on Zamfara State today, for a strategic meeting expected to set the tone for the party’s forthcoming national convention.
Party sources said the Zamfara strategic meeting, which would be hosted by Governor Dauda Lawal, would focus on shaping the party’s direction ahead of its national convention, seek reconciliation, harmonisation of interests, and the design of a robust electoral strategy aimed at reviving the PDP’s fortunes and energising its base ahead of 2027.
Some of the PDP Governors, led by the Chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, arrived Gusau, Zamfara State, yesterday.
This comes as it was gathered that the Zoning Committee of the party, headed by Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has recommended that the presidential candidate should be zoned to reflect the mood of the nation.
Also, a chieftain of the party and elder statesman, Chief Bode George, yesterday, warned that the party must take decisive action against members undermining its unity if it was to remain a credible opposition force ahead of its next national convention.
Speaking in an interview with ARISE NEWS, on the outcome of a recent consultative meeting, George stressed that the PDP cannot continue to tolerate internal sabotage.
It was also learnt that the PDP has continued to mount pressure on former President, Goodluck Jonathan to join the 2027 presidential race.
There is currently division in the PDP with some members loyal to the current leadership and Governors, while there is another camp loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The Wike’s camp has rejected the Southern Leaders’ Zoning Consultative meeting held in Lagos on Wednesday, urging stakeholders to reject the resolutions from the meeting.
However, two members of the Zoning Committee told THISDAY, in separate interviews, that the committee decided that zoning of the presidential candidate of the party in 2027 would reflect the mood of the nation, which indicates that they may look towards the southern part of the country for their pick.
According to a source in the committee, ”it is almost near consensus that the presidential candidate of the PDP for the 2027 should reflect the mood of the nation. ‘We have competent presidential material from the South. Once this decision is adopted by the National Executive Committee, (NEC) meeting on Monday, you will start to see the calibre of the presidential materials gradually coming out,” he added.
Asked whether any of the current members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party is qualified to contest for the new membership of the leadership, he said it depends on the further micro zonings that would be approved by the NEC, expected to hold Monday.
Meanwhile, in a statement, a spokesperson to the Zamfara State Governor, Sulaiman Bala Idris, stated that the meeting would be a pivotal gathering to deliberate on key political strategies and foster unity within the party.
“Governor Dauda Lawal extends a warm welcome to his counterparts, the governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” the statement read.
The governors are convening today (Friday) for an important session of the PDP Governors Forum. Governor Lawal will host a dinner this evening, ahead of tomorrow’s strategic meeting.”
The statement further noted that the meeting would provide an opportunity for party leaders to address pressing political issues, strengthen internal cohesion, and collaborate on developmental initiatives across their respective states.
Additionally, the Governors would discuss preparations for the upcoming national convention, organised by the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC), scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025.
In the meantime, Chief Bode George, has warned that the party must take decisive action against members undermining its unity if it was to remain a credible opposition force ahead of its next national convention.
Speaking in an interview with ARISE NEWS yesterday on the outcome of a recent consultative meeting, George stressed that the PDP cannot continue to tolerate internal sabotage.
“In life, you have those that can be termed as progress terminators, and also success accelerators,” he said.
“If you want to be a progress terminator, please ship yourself out. And the party must be strong enough to take that decision. Period.”
George explained that the zoning committee, established by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), was mandated to review leadership arrangements across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
He noted that what was initially planned as a non-elective convention had been converted to an elective one because of internal crises and the resignation of some key officials.

“This particular convention that is coming would just have been a non-elective convention. But because of the crisis we have gone through, and the resignation of some of the principals, NEC decided it has to be an elective convention,” he said.

The PDP stalwart expressed frustration with members he described as disloyal, accusing them of undermining the collective interest of the party. According to him, individuals who are dissatisfied with party decisions should either join another political group or form their own.

“We can’t continue to appeal to those who have made up their minds to jump ship. If they are tired of the party, let them go. Enough is enough. It is not anybody’s private field. It’s an organisation bigger than any one of us,” George declared.

He emphasised that the party’s primary responsibility was to the Nigerian electorate, not to individual ambitions, warning that disobedience to party decisions amounted to a betrayal of trust.

“The most important people that we can talk to are the electorate. If they see the quality of management, the quality of personality, and the ideology we are presenting to them outside, they will give us their votes,” he said.

George also pointed to what he described as a structural difference between the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). “The difference between the PDP and the APC is as clear as a crystal. In APC, there is only one man who can speak to the heart of the party the president. In PDP, no individual owns the party. It is collective responsibility.”

Reflecting on the party’s zoning principles, George reiterated that rotational leadership remains fundamental to Nigeria’s stability and to the PDP’s founding ideals. He argued that those ignoring these principles were threatening not just the party’s future but also national balance.

“There are six geopolitical zones, and six top positions in the country. That was the understanding since 1998. Everybody must have a sense of belonging. That is the difference between us and others,” he explained.

Calling for decisive action at the upcoming NEC meeting, George insisted that members must either respect the constitution of the PDP or leave.

“This NEC meeting must extract all these misgivings, and if the party does not make a decisive decision, we will just go back and vote no. Enough is enough,” he warned.

The PDP, he concluded, must present itself as disciplined and united if it hopes to retain its role as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.

No fewer than 13 people have been killed during morning prayers in Mantau community, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, confirmed the death of the worshipers in a statement on Tuesday.

Mu’azu, who did not mention the date of the incident, said it occurred when the criminal elements launched a reprisal on the community. 

He said: “The Katsina State Government today announced immediate security reinforcements and support measures following a tragic incident in the Unguwan Mantau community, Malumfashi Local Government Area, where 13 residents lost their lives during morning prayers.

“The Muslim members of the community were praying in the mosque during the Fajr prayer when the criminal element started shooting sporadically in the mosque.

“The attack was in retaliation for the community’s successful defence efforts two days earlier. The people of Unguwan Mantau decided to lay an ambush against the bandits and killed many of them. 

“They rescued victims taken from Ruwan Sanyi village, seized 3 motorcycles and 2 AK 47. The security agencies are now on the ground in Unguwan Muntau to restore normalcy.”

He, however, said the air component commander of the Forward Operating Base, Nigerian Army and  Nigerian Police Force have been deployed to “clear those bandits because during the rainy season, bandits hide under the crops to perpetrate their evil acts”.

While reiterating the state government’s unwavering commitment to eliminating criminal elements from the state, Mu’azu said: “We are working towards bringing the bandits to book.”

He added: “As government, we salute the gallantry disposition of the people of Unguwar Mantau, and we are committed to fighting these bandits and ensuring safety across our communities. 

“The state government extends heartfelt condolences to the families affected and reaffirms its unwavering support for community-based security initiatives while working to eliminate criminal elements from the region.”

In a wave of devastating onslaught against terrorism in the country and the sub-region, six suspected Boko Haram members, including a young man believed to be Muslim Mohammed Yusuf, the son of Boko Haram’s late founder, Mohammed Yusuf, have been arrested.

Authorities in Chad confirmed the arrest.

The latest development followed a week of stellar anti-terror breakthroughs as security forces in Nigeria and Chad struck heavy blows against extremist networks operating across the Lake Chad Basin, with ripple effects drawing in international partners.

This was as the Nigerian government has also announced the capture of two top leaders of the faction of Ansaru terrorist group – Mahmud Muhammad Usman, aka Abu Bara’a, and Mahmud al-Nigeri, known as Mallam Mamuda

However, impressed by the development, the United States and the United Kingdom have congratulated the country forwhat it described as a “significant forward step” in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

At the same time, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria unveiled stricter visa requirements, compelling Nigerian applicants to disclose all social media handles used within the last five years, citing global security priorities.

The arrest of Muslim Yusuf, known by the alias Abdrahman Mahamat Abdoulaye was first reported by a Nigerian intelligence source operating in the Lake Chad region.

The source said Yusuf, believed to be around 18 years old, was detained alongside five other alleged militants in N’Djamena by Chadian authorities during a counter-terror sweep.

Photos obtained after the arrests showed a slender young man in a blue tracksuit with a striking resemblance to his father, standing among older detainees.

Chadian police spokesman, Paul Manga, confirmed the arrest, saying the suspects were “bandits operating in the city” without legal documentation.

While police described them as Boko Haram members, Nigerian intelligence suggested that Yusuf’s cell was part of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter group that broke away from Boko Haram in 2016 over ideological differences.

Yusuf, who was an infant when his father was killed in 2009 during a Nigerian military crackdown that left about 800 people dead, was also the younger brother of Habib Yusuf (alias Abu Mus’ab al-Barnawi), the current ISWAP leader.

A former Boko Haram lieutenant familiar with the group’s inner workings, but who has since renounced the movement, also confirmed the arrest, describing it as a “major symbolic victory” in the fight against insurgency in the region.

In a parallel development, the Nigerian government, had last week, announced the arrest of two notorious Ansaru commanders: Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Abu Bara’a) and Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Mallam Mamuda).

The duo, long wanted for their roles in high-profile kidnappings and attacks across the northwest, were captured in a security operation praised by both Abuja and Washington.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria lauded the arrests in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “We commend the Nigerian Government and security forces on the successful arrest of wanted Ansaru leaders, Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Abu Bara’a) and Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Mallam Mamuda). This is a significant forward in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and extremism.”

In the same breath, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, also on X described the feat as “an extraordinary and very significant success. A major step forward in the fight against terrorism.

“Congratulations to the security agencies and officers involved under the leadership of NSA Ribadu,” added the UK Permanent Representative to ECOWAS.

The arrests marked one of the most high-profile successes against Ansaru in recent years, a group that has maintained ties with al-Qaeda and has been responsible for multiple kidnappings of foreigners and attacks on Nigerian security forces.

Amid the global spotlight on counter-terror operations, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, however, rolled out a new visa directive requiring all applicants to disclose their social media usernames and handles from the past five years.

In a statement, the Mission said applicants must enter the details on the DS-160 visa application form and certify their accuracy before submission.

“Omitting social media information could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future visas,” the U.S. Mission warned.

The measure, according to U.S. officials, was part of enhanced screening mechanisms designed to protect national security and prevent extremists from exploiting immigration loopholes.

A security expert, Dr Bashir Uji, held the view that the twin arrests of Boko Haram’s founder’s son in Chad and Ansaru leaders in Nigeria underscored growing international collaboration against terrorism in West Africa.

While many Nigerians thought the developments were rare moments of relief, Uji warned that though the arrests dealt symbolic and operational blows to insurgent networks, the groups retained the capacity to regroup and launch retaliatory strikes.

President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Bago and ex-Senate President, David Mark, yesterday felicitated former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) as he clocked 84 on August 17, 2025.

In the same vein, former President Goodluck Jonathan for the second time in three weeks, yesterday visited Babangida at his Minna hilltop mansion in Niger state, declaring that the former Nigerian military leader will continue to be relevant in the scheme of things.

But Tinubu, in a release issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, rejoiced with the family, friends, and associates of the former military leader whose eight years of rule, he said, greatly impacted Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.

He celebrated Babangida’s distinguished military career, which included serving as an instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Commander of the 4 Reconnaissance Regiment, Commander of the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, Director of Army Staff Duties and Plans, and Chief of Army Staff.

The President noted IBB’s stewardship to the country, saying his military administration will be remembered for its massive investment in infrastructure, such as the Third Mainland Bridge, and the reforms that liberalised the Nigerian economy.

The former military leader, he recalled, also established the State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), among others.

Tinubu also highlighted Babangida’s role in creating states and relocating the Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja. While thanking him for his sacrifice and leadership, the President prayed to God to grant the former military leader more years and renewed strength.

Besides, former Vice President, Atiku, in his tribute said that  IBB’s life was worthy of celebration as 84 years is a milestone in the journey of life, and in every aspect of his journey, noting that the former military President distinguished himself remarkably.

”As General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, former military President of Nigeria celebrates his 84th birthday anniversary, it’s my honour and privilege to join millions of Nigerians to felicitate with him and his family on this special occasion. 

”It’s difficult to write about Nigeria’s journey to progress and development without a mention of the role that he played in shaping the destiny of Nigeria. In terms of national infrastructure,  his legacy is still standing tall despite the passage of time. He gave Nigeria visionary and purposeful leadership. The foundation he laid is worthy of emulation. Babangida is widely respected because of his humble leadership style. 

”As one of those Nigerians privileged to know him closely enough, let me say without any fear of contradictions that it’s impossible to interact with him without being instantly inspired by his erudition, intelligence, and amazing wisdom. 

”His magnanimity and understanding of our national diversity is one of his finest virtues. In fact, even his stubborn critics may automatically change their perception of him once they have the opportunity to meet him. This is a widely held testimony about IBB,” Atiku stated.

According to the former vice president, Babangida’s understanding of Nigeria’s diversity is one of the reasons why he is held in high esteem, explaining that the massive attendance at the recent launch of his memoirs in Abuja was a revelation about how he is respected by Nigerians. 

”IBB is a household name in Nigeria, and this may not be unconnected with the impact of his leadership. Rarely do I come across a public figure with such broad-based national respectability. 

”No wonder he is perceived as a phenomenon in Nigeria and beyond. He is a military man with democratic disposition, and this is one of the great virtues that define him. Paying tribute to a remarkable leader like IBB is one of the hardest tasks because one may ultimately run out of adjectives to do justice to his shining virtues. 

“The former military President’s recruitment of Nigeria’s best and finest to implement his administration’s policies stands him out as a visionary leader. Ethnic and religious bigotry and bias are alien to his nature. This is one of the finest virtues for which he is widely respected. His commitment to our unity is laudable. Indeed, he is a nation builder. 

”I wish to put on record that IBB is a bold and decisive leader who never hesitated to take difficult decisions. Moreover, he never hesitated to take responsibility for difficult decisions. He didn’t sacrifice his subordinates for his own mistakes. At every point Nigeria faced challenges to its unity and survival, he didn’t hesitate to be part of the efforts to find solutions to those challenges. 

”As one of those who have been inspired by his visionary leadership, I am proud to recall his efforts towards African stability and unity. His role in bringing peace and stability to Liberia is well noted. IBB is respected by AU and ECOWAS leaders on account of his contributions to the stability of Africa. His role in bringing the apartheid system in South Africa to an end is no less remarkable. 

”As IBB marks this remarkable journey of life, may God continue to bless his life with good health and grant him more years in good health and vitality in the service of Nigeria and humanity.”, the former vice president stated.

Also yesterday, Niger State Governor, Bago,  in the message signed on his behalf by Bologi Ibrahim, his Chief Press Secretary, said Babangida has dedicated most of  his life to serving  the country.

 “General Babangida has demonstrated bravery and patriotism in ensuring the unity, stability, and progress of Nigeria during and after his active service”

Bago also said that the launch of the IBB presidential library, named after his late wife, Dr. Maryam Babangida, was a clear indication of his commitment to preserving rich history and promoting education, which will benefit Niger State, Nigeria, and beyond.

He maintained that the elder statesman had written his name in the sands of time through the numerous policies and programmes implemented when he was the Head of State.

In his tributes, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, described  Babangida as “a patriot who believes firmly in the sanctity of one united and indivisible Nigeria.”

He said: “Today is not merely to mark the passage of time, but to celebrate the extraordinary life of a soldier, a patriot, and a statesman who, at 84, stands as a living monument to courage, service, and honour. From the day he first donned the nation’s uniform, General Babangida embodied the creed of duty before self.”

He noted that Babangida’s career, marked by discipline and distinction, spanned decades of national service; defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, safeguarding her unity, and mentoring generations of officers who went on to lead with the same integrity he exemplified.

The former Senate President, in a statement by his Media Aide, Paul Mumeh, recalled Babangida’s stewardship during his years of service: “In the barracks and on the battlefield, he was resolute. In the corridors of policy and leadership, he was wise. His voice carried the weight of experience, yet it was always tempered with humility,” he stressed.

Mark further remarked that those privileged to serve under Babangida remember not only his tactical brilliance but also his humanity as a leader who could command with firmness yet inspire with compassion.

He added that even in retirement, Babangida has never withdrawn from service to the nation, stressing that instead, he has remained a moral compass in public discourse and an elder statesman whose counsel is sought across political divides.

“His patriotism was never about the uniform alone, but about a lifelong commitment to the ideals for which he once risked everything. At 84, his medals may have faded in shine, but his legacy gleams brighter than ever,” Mark stated.

In addition, former President Goodluck Jonathan for the second time in three weeks yesterday visited one of his predecessors, Babangida, at his Minna hill top mansion  in Niger state. The visit, according to Jonathan, was to felicitate with Babangida on his 84th birthday.

Jonathan, after the visit held behind closed doors said Babangida stands out as one  committed leader that wants the best for this country.

“He did his best for this country, he did his best as a military head of state.  That is why till today his house is like some sort of Mecca. People come here regularly. That tells you a lot about the character of IBB,” he said.

Jonathan added that Babangida “takes Nigeria, the whole country as his own”, adding that “he is not a sectional leader as his friends cut across the entire country”.

The former President, who was accompanied by a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain,  Segun Sowunmi, among others, also submitted that Babangida ” is one person that we will continue to celebrate”.

In the same vein, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris,  described  Babangida as someone who has continued to stand as a voice of wisdom, moderation, and guidance in the nation’s collective journey towards peace, unity and sustainable development.

Idris made the portrayal yesterday in a congratulatory message on the 84th birthday of the statesman, who was the head of a military junta from 1985 to 1993.

The minister said  Babangida is an enduring statesman whose life and service remain etched in Nigeria’s political history, adding he derived great joy to congratulate former Military President on his 84th birthday.

“As he marks this milestone, we celebrate not just his years, but also his immense contributions to the evolution of modern Nigeria, particularly through his championing of political and economic reforms. His legacy of service, courage, and vision continues to inspire leaders and citizens alike.

“At 84, General Babangida remains a vast reservoir of knowledge and experience, inspiring successive generations with his clarity of thought and depth of understanding.

“I pray that Almighty God grants him many more years in good health, strength, and fulfillment. May this new chapter of his life be marked by peace, joy, and the continued affection of a grateful nation that holds him in high esteem,” Idris said.

Isyaku Ibrahim Dies at 88

Prominent business tycoon and politician, Alhaji Isyaku Ibrahim, is dead.

He died in the early hours of Saturday at a private hospital in Abuja.
He was aged 88.

The late Ibrahim was one of the founding leaders of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and close associate of Second Republic Nigerian President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari. He nominated Shehu Shagari as the NPN presidential flagbearer, as leader of the Plateau delegates.

He was one of the founding fathers and financier of the Peoples Democratic Party, and was the campaign manager of the late former Vice President Alex Ekwueme, when he vied for the PDP presidential ticket against then President Olusegun Obasanjo at the party’s primaries in 2003.
He was the founder of the Mighty Jets Football club of Jos in the 70s and the first Nigerian to hire a foreign coach from Brazil to manage the club.

Niger state Governor Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Bago has confirmed the arrest of a terrorist Kingpin Abubakar Abba.

Abubakar Abba until his arrest was the leader of the dreaded Mahmuda terrorist organisation which operated in the Borgu local government area of the state and part of Kwara state.

Governor Bago said the terrorist leader was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Security DSS in Wawa town.

A statement by Bologi Ibrahim, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bago, on his facebook page said the terrorist was apprehended without a shot being fired.

“Yes, it is true. I can confirm that the leader of Mahmuda, which is one of the most dangerous terror groups in West Africa, Abubakar Abba, has been arrested by the DSS,” Bologi Ibrahim apparently quoting Governor Bago posted on the page.

Ibrahim continued that, “He ( Abba) was apprehended alive through an intelligence-led operation by the DSS.”

“This is a huge victory for us as a people and as a government, and President Tinubu deserves commendation for this cheering news” he submitted

“Abba’s arrest demonstrates the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to truly ending insecurity and promoting the well-being of Nigerians.” Bologi said in the statement

The governor according to his spokesman, also commented on appointments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating: “Look at the appointments in the security services, especially the DSS. It takes a tremendous degree of intelligence and competence to without firing a single shot, capture a high-profile terrorist like Abba. Where there is a will, they say, there is a way. Mr. President has consistently shown that willpower. That’s why we are recording such successes”.

Bago promised that the Niger State government will continue to collaborate with the federal government and security agencies to ensure that terrorism is halted in the country.

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court has discharged Miss Comfort Emmanson of unruly behaviour and assault charges brought against her by the police.

Magistrate Olanrewaju Salami, on August 11, remanded Emmanson in a correctional centre for allegedly assaulting flight crew onboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, Salami discharged Emmason following the withdrawal of the five-count charge brought against her by the police.

The prosecutor, Inspector Oluwabunmi Adeitan, informed the court of new developments warranting the case withdrawal and submitted an application, which the court accepted. (NAN)
