Greater Manchester Police said Ricky Hatton was found dead early Sunday, 14 September, at a residence in Hyde, Greater Manchester, and that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
Hatton turned professional in 1997 and quickly became one of Britain’s most celebrated fighters. Over a 15-year career, he compiled 45 wins in 48 bouts, winning world titles in both the light-welterweight and welterweight divisions.
His signature triumph came in June 2005, when he defeated the highly regarded Kostya Tszyu to capture the IBF light-welterweight crown. Hatton later added the WBA belt, earning recognition as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of his era.
The Manchester-born boxer went on to headline major bouts against global icons Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2009, occasions that drew huge British followings to Las Vegas and cemented his status as a national sporting hero.
Hatton officially retired in 2012 but remained active as a trainer and promoter. In July 2025, he announced plans for a comeback fight scheduled for December in Dubai, a move that had excited fans eager to see the popular fighter back in the ring.
