Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday called on Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume, to put aside their disagreements and reconcile.

Shettima encouraged both leaders to settle their rift and collaborate in the interest of Benue State’s growth and stability.

Addressing stakeholders in Abuja, Shettima said: “I want to make a special appeal to his Excellency, George Akume and his Excellency Hyacinth Alia to mend fences and work together.

“Apart from Abdullahi Ganduje, Akume is the longest serving public servant in our current dispensation.

“He’s over 70 and he started work in Benue House and was the Director of Protocol, he was a Permanent Secretary, was a governor for eight years, senator for 12 years, minister for four years, and now the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“You have seen it all, you are an elder statesman, reach out to our junior brother, yes you have been here together, Benue deserves peace and development.

“What binds us together supersedes whatever that divides us, the trajectory of global growth is facing Africa and Nigeria will make or mar that transition.”

Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has urged the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu to right the wrongs of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.

DAILY POST reports that Egbetokun resigned his position on Tuesday after years of battle over the legality of his service extension by President Bola Tinubu.

In a congratulatory message to the newly appointed IGP, Deji, who warned that there is no friend in the jungle, threatened that there will be a fight if he follows the wrong part.

He wrote, “Congratulations to my personal person. This is now an opportunity to right all the wrongs and evil the Nigerian police are known for.

“If you don’t do the right thing Egbon, there’s no friend in the jungle; we will start fighting. You have been presented with a rare opportunity to write your name on the sand of time.

“Reform the police, ensure human rights of citizens are respected and comply with the Presidential directive of Tinubu which Egbetokun didn’t fully comply with by withdrawing all police officers from VIPs so they can go protect the nation. Stop the culture of extortion of citizens.”

No friend in jungle – Deji sets agenda for new IGP, reveals only way to avoid fight

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has released the new BRT fares following the fare increment on Monday 23rd, February 2026.

The new Fares was revealed on Tuesday, by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and will take effect from Monday, March 2nd 2026.

The price increment decision was approved by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, following appeals from regulated public transport operators who raised concerns about the rising cost of running their services.

The state government has earlier explained that the increase is meant to reduce the pressure on public transport operators caused by ongoing economic challenges. It also noted that the review follows the state’s already approved annual fare review system.

Preliminary, LAMATA had said Bus Operating Companies (BOCs) have continued to struggle with higher operating costs, including vehicle maintenance, spare parts and staff salaries.

“In a bid to maintain and improve service standards, operators are also investing in the procurement of new cleaner, and more fuel-efficient buses to enhance passenger comfort and promote environmental sustainability ” the statement said.

Lagos govt releases new BRT fares

Civil society groups in Niger State have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Niger Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC), warning that they will embark on a peaceful mass mobilisation if persistent power outages and exploitative billing practices are not urgently addressed.

The protest, scheduled for March 3, 2026, in Minna, is being convened by Capacity Media Trust Radio – Human Rights Radio and led by Comrade Lanre Sadiq Ishaq, Chairman of the Niger State Civil Society Organisations.

The mobilisation also involves members of the Nigerian Bar Association and organised labour groups in the state.

At the heart of the agitation are complaints about erratic electricity supply, delayed prepaid meter installations, and poor infrastructure maintenance.

The groups are demanding the immediate suspension of estimated billing until electricity supply is stabilised, prompt restoration of power during outages, and equitable distribution of electricity across all communities.

They are also calling for the installation of prepaid meters to promote transparency and consumer control, as well as full responsibility by the distribution companies for transformer repairs, infrastructure replacement, and maintenance, without transferring costs to customers.

“We cannot continue to pay for darkness. If there is no light, there should be no bill. Electricity is not a privilege but a basic service that citizens are entitled to. The people of Niger State deserve stable supply, prepaid meters, transparent communication, and an end to exploitative billing,” the statement read.

“Participants are expected to carry placards and banners under the theme, ‘No Light, No Bill,’ as they peacefully demand fairness, accountability, and reliable power supply,” it added.

The organisers emphasised that the protest would be lawful and peaceful, calling on security agencies to provide adequate protection for participants.
