The Benue State Government has restated its resolve to ensure that the dualisation of the Otukpo township road currently being handled by the Federal Ministry of Works is delivered on schedule, with June 2026 set as the completion date.
This assurance was given by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode, on Friday, 16th January 2026, during a media briefing after he inspected the Phase Two segment of the Makurdi–Ninth Mile dual carriageway within Otukpo Local Government Area.
Dr. Ode explained that the State Government is actively supporting the Federal Government’s efforts by financing compensation along the Wurukum Roundabout–Orokam stretch.
According to him, the state has committed more than N4.6 billion to compensate affected persons and handle the relocation of utilities situated within the project’s right of way.
He praised the Federal Ministry of Works for its swift response to the appeal made by Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia’s administration, which led to the reassignment of the contractor, China Harbour Engineering Company, to resume work on the Otukpo township portion.
The Deputy Governor further noted that the Controller of Works had given assurances that the Otukpo axis would be delivered by June 2026.
He also revealed that the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change would be working directly with his office to resolve outstanding issues delaying progress.
He said the movement of water pipelines and overhead power lines would be completed within two weeks so the contractor can proceed without obstruction.
Dr. Ode stated the importance of the road project to the Idoma community, stressing that the long years of neglect had imposed severe difficulties on residents.
He added that once completed, the dualised road would stimulate local commerce and significantly ease transportation for both residents and travellers.
Representing the construction firm, the Site Manager, Mr. Dong Hong Jie, pointed out that the relocation of pipelines and electric poles remained the biggest hindrance but assured that the work pace would increase.
He stated that construction activities would intensify, starting with the right-hand side asphalt pavement, which is expected to be finished before the end of next month.
