Bank of Ghana marks 60 years of the Cedi with year-long national celebration

The Bank of Ghana will today, Tuesday, 28 October, launch a year-long celebration to mark 60 years of the cedi — the country’s symbol of economic independence and national pride.

The official launch, themed “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience,” will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre. President John Dramani Mahama will attend the ceremony as the Special Guest of Honour.

The Cedi@60 anniversary is not just a commemoration of history but also a moment to rebuild national confidence in the local currency as a cornerstone of stability and identity.

The central bank has outlined a series of activities across the country to mark the milestone, including regional roadshows, public education on clean note handling and currency security, as well as youth-focused competitions in art, music, and essay writing to promote awareness of the cedi’s heritage.

The anniversary celebration will host a Currency Conference that will convene leading experts from global central banks, academia, and the private sector, to reflect on Ghana’s monetary evolution and explore the future of its financial system.

The Bank of Ghana says the year-long commemoration is expected to inspire renewed national pride and a collective resolve to protect the integrity of the cedi for generations to come.
